Chapter 1468
[ 576 words ]
“Pfft-“
Hearing Juniper’s teasing, Lorelei couldn’t hold back a laugh.
Realizing she was being too obvious, she straightened her posture, suppressing her giggles. “Sorry.”
Catching the faint curve of her lips, Harold’s gaze deepened.
Fine.
As long as she was happy, getting roasted by Juniper was worth it.
“Let’s eat.”
Shanley set the plates down and fetched a jacket to drape over Juniper’s shoulders.
Harold lifted Lorelei up and set her down in her chair.
“Do you like spicy food, Lorelei?” Shanley asked.
“I…”
Before she could answer, Harold interjected, “She doesn’t.”
He then thoughtfully prepared a mild, tangy vinaigrette dip for her instead.
Seeing Harold’s attentiveness, Juniper’s eyes flicked up.
How was that any different from the way that old fox Shanley took care of her?
If Harold didn’t have feelings for Lorelei, she would personally chop Shanley’s head off.
*(Shanley: Why am I catching strays?)*
“Thank you.”
Lorelei was actually quite surprised that Harold knew her preferences so well.
Her cheeks flushed as she picked up a warm pastry, unable to resist stealing a glance at the man beside her.
The subtle, flustered shyness was impossible to hide.
*Munch munch munch…*
Across the table, Juniper chewed on her food, her eyes darting between the two of them, taking in every ounce of their awkward tension.
Suspicious.
Highly suspicious.
Did they seriously look like a couple on the verge of divorce?
They looked more like they were in the honeymoon phase!
Even with her notoriously low emotional intelligence, she could feel the undeniable chemistry between them.
*Munch munch munch…*
Juniper reached for another pastry before suddenly pausing. “Harold, what happened to your lip?”
“Cough, cough, cough…”
Lorelei nearly choked in panic at the question, only recovering after gulping down the water Harold quickly handed her.
Juniper blinked.
“Just bumped it by accident,” Harold replied calmly, his eyes lifting. “It’s nothing major.”
“Is that so?”
Juniper set her food down and casually picked up her juice, grinning as she took a
sip. “Why does that bump look exactly like a set of teeth marks?”
Lorelei’s breath hitched, completely avoiding the younger girl’s gaze.
“Looks kind of like Lorelei’s teeth, actually.” Juniper smirked, leaning in closer to her. “Look, even that little chip matches perfectly.”
“Um.”
Lorelei shot her head up, wanting deny it, but under the girl’s mischievous stare, she had no
choice but to confess. “It
just an
accident. Totally unintentional.”
“It’s fine even if it was on purpose.”
Juniper nodded with exaggerated understanding, narrowing her eyes as she lowered her voice. “Harold’s as stubborn as a rock. Next time, bite him harder.”
“He…”
Lorelei looked up, crashing straight into Harold’s deep, smoldering gaze. Her cheeks burned hot as she mumbled, “It really wasn’t.”
“Let’s eat.”
Shanley started preparing eggs for Juniper, effectively diffusing the awkwardness Theia and Silas called earlier. They said everything’s set up at the house, and you two can head over whenever you’re ready.”
After meeting Lorelei yesterday, Juniper had immediately called Theia to spill all the details.
Theia had instantly issued a
mandatory summons to the rest of
the family: everyone had to be there tomorrow to officially welcome this previously unseen member of the family.
“Alright.”
Harold nodded, copying Shanley’s actions to prep an egg.
Then he moved on to assembling sandwiches, spreading jam toast…
In no time at all.
The plates in front of Lorelei and Juniper were piled into absolute mountains of food.
Shanley: “Eat up.”
Harold: “You eat up too.”
Shanley looked up, a massive question mark floating through his brain.
Buddy, are you blindly copying my homework without reading the question?
Juniper ate this much because she had an enormous appetite.
Lorelei, who had a notoriously small appetite, stared at her overflowing plate with a deep frown. “This is way too much. I can’t finish all this.”
