Chapter 1486
[ 579 words ]
Mrs. Houston?
Lorelei’s cheeks burned. This was the very first time she had ever heard Harold call her that.
“Do you know who pushed you?”
“Sienna.”
“Why?”
“Because of Lawyer Garner,” Lorelei answered honestly. “She told me to stay away from him and said a bunch of ridiculous things.”
“What things?” Harold’s pace slowed, his fingers tightening their grip on her hand.
“That the Garner family would never accept a discarded wife, and that I shouldn’t harbor any delusions about Joel.” Lorelei repeated the conversation word for word. “She likes him, so she treats me like the enemy.”
“And you?”
Hearing this, Harold lifted his gaze, an unreadable emotion swimming in his eyes as he looked at her. “What do you think?”
What did that mean?
Lorelei analyzed the question carefully before answering seriously: “A woman like Sienna isn’t good enough for Joel.”
Joel was so kind and gentle. As for Sienna, calling her an evil witch wouldn’t even be an exaggeration.
Harold stopped entirely, his dark eyes locked onto her with suffocating intensity.
Uh-oh.
Lorelei blinked. She shouldn’t have praised Joel in front of Harold.
“Then what kind of woman do you think someone like me deserves?” Harold’s gaze darkened significantly.
“Huh?”
Lorelei stayed quiet for a moment before replying, “You already know the answer. Why ask me?”
She knew full well she wasn’t the one he wanted.
“I know perfectly well.” Harold’s eyes were bottomless, trapping her gaze. “What about you? Are you certain the person in your heart is the right match for you?”
“Harold, what are you trying to say?”
Lorelei paused, thoroughly baffled by the interrogation. “If you’re warning me not to get any crazy ideas, I already know where I stand.”
For Harold, he assumed she was talking about “Joel Garner.”
“As long as you know.” Harold’s lips twitched, his voice dropping low and raspy.
“Joel Garner isn’t on the same path as you. You’d better kill that fantasy right now.”
A man like Joel wasn’t her match.
Her only match was him.
Lorelei froze in place, staring at Harold in sheer disbelief.
Why bring Joel into this out of nowhere!
Did Harold actually think she was jealous over Joel?
Lorelei glanced at Harold nervously and realized he was staring right through her, his gaze impossibly deep.
Was he just being possessive because they were still legally married, or…
A terrifying thought suddenly bloomed in her chest.
Could Harold be jealous of Joel because he actually liked her?
She was losing her mind.
She didn’t even dare entertain such a delusion.
Just as her thoughts were spiraling.
A staff member knocked on the door. “Mr. Houston, Mrs. Houston, are you both ready?”
“Let’s go.”
Harold draped a shawl over Lorelei’s
shoulders, held out his open palm to her, and spoke again. Mrs. Houston
Lorelei stared at him for a few seconds before gently resting her hand in his.
Harold immediately closed his grip, interlacing their fingers tightly.
Lorelei glanced at him, her heart hammering against her ribs.
If Harold really did have feelings for her, what about the first love he couldn’t forget?
Love wasn’t something you could share.
Hmph.
She suddenly felt a little annoyed with Harold!
Down in the hall.
Because of the recent chaos, all the guests were huddled together, whispering incessantly.
“Mr. Landon, what exactly is
happening here?” an annoyed guest
complained Wasn’t just an
accident? What does this have to do with the rest of us?”
Trapping everyone here, refusing to let anyone leave.
It was completely out of line.
“Mr. Houston believes his wife falling into the pool was no accident,” Mr. Landon explained with a strained smile He demands arexplanation and we are simply following his instructions.”
“The only person standing near Mrs. Houston at the time was Sienna, wasn’t it?”
