Chapter 140

Chapter 140:

If I’m not there on your eighteenth birthday, if you’re reading this alone… please know that every moment of every day, I was thinking of you. Your first smile, your first word, the way you used to reach for me with your tiny hands. You are the best thing I ever did.

Be brave, my love. Be kind. Be strong. The world will try to break you — let it. And then show it how beautifully you can rebuild.

There are things I wish I could tell you, secrets I wish I could share. But some burdens are not meant for a daughter to carry. Some truths are too heavy for young shoulders.

Just know this: your father and I loved you more than anything in this world. And wherever we are, we will always be watching over you.

Happy birthday, my sweet girl. All my love, forever and always, Mom

I read the letter twice. Three times. The words blurred as tears filled my eyes.

She had written this for my eighteenth birthday. She never got to give it to me.

I picked up another letter, then another. Each one was dated — different birthdays, different ages. She had been adding to this box for years, imagining a future she never got to see.

At the bottom, beneath the letters, was a small velvet pouch. I opened it and found a delicate silver bracelet engraved with a single word: Fortitude.

I slipped it onto my wrist. It was too large — she must have bought it years ago, hoping I would grow into it.

I sobbed then, great heaving cries that shook my whole body. Not for justice. Not for revenge. For her. For the mother I had lost, for the letters she had written, for the eighteen years she never got to give me.

At the very bottom of the box lay a photograph I had never seen before. My mother and another woman, young and laughing, their arms around each other. The other woman looked familiar — the same sharp jaw, the same storm-gray eyes. I tucked it back into the box without letting myself think too hard about it. Just another mystery in a life already full of them.

I sat there for a long time, clutching the bracelet, letting the tears fall. When I finally looked up, the sky outside the motel window was beginning to lighten.

I pulled out the encrypted phone and typed: I have it. Her letters. Coming home.

The reply came instantly: I’m already moving. Meet me at the cabin.

I smiled through the tears — the first real smile in days.

On the long drive out of Hyde territory, I held the box in my lap and let the morning sun warm the wood. I was hours late. Dallas would never let me hear the end of it.

But I had done it. I had faced the monster and walked out with the only thing that truly mattered — my mother’s voice, reaching across fourteen years to tell me she loved me. And somewhere in that dark manor, a woman who had been silent for fourteen years had finally spoken. Not with words, but with a single act of quiet courage that might just be enough to save her soul.
