As they searched further, the children rushed in upon hearing the commotion. Despite their initial fear, they threw themselves at the legs of the National Security officers, clutching them tightly.
“Don’t touch my parents’ things! You’re all bad people!” they shouted.
Su Hongchen tried to hold onto He Xingzhi’s younger sister, but the little girl, in her panic, bit him hard.
“You’re just like them, trying to steal from my parents. You’re a big bad guy too!” she cried.
Although the bite wasn’t painful due to her small size, the children’s fierce defense of their adoptive parents left Su Hongchen and the other officers deeply disturbed. Even the two little boys stumbled over to join the protest, demonstrating how deeply Jin Xubo and his wife had influenced these children.
Could it be that, despite being a spy, Jin Xubo genuinely loved children? This idea seemed absurd, but they couldn’t think of any other explanation.
“We should take these children to the police station. If they stay here and get hurt, that would be terrible,” one of the officers suggested, and everyone immediately agreed.

As soon as he arrived, Su Xiaoxiao ran up to him, full of questions. “Brother, did you get any information out of that spy?”
“No, but we found He Xingzhi’s sister. It turns out the spy had adopted her,” Su Hongchen replied with a heavy tone.
Su Xiaoxiao froze for a moment before her eyes lit up like fireworks. “Really? Are you sure it’s really He Xingzhi’s sister?” she asked eagerly.
Su Hongchen nodded. “The little girl admitted it herself.”
“If she still remembers, why didn’t she go to the police station or try to contact He Xingzhi?” Su Xiaoxiao asked, sensing something wasn’t right.
Su Hongchen sighed. “She thinks that He Xingzhi sold her and abandoned her.”
Su Xiaoxiao opened her mouth but couldn’t find the words to refute him. A child who had gone missing at two or three years old would still retain some memories, though those memories might be a bit jumbled. It wasn’t surprising that she had confused being sold by her stepmother with being abandoned by her brother.
“Where is she now? Can’t we bring her back and explain everything to her?” Su Xiaoxiao asked anxiously. She remembered how, in his previous life, He Xingzhi had never found his sister, and it had been his lifelong regret. Now that they had the chance to change that outcome, she couldn’t bear the thought of anything going wrong.
Su Hongchen shook his head. “The children are still at the police station. The older ones who can speak will need to be questioned thoroughly. Even if everything checks out and they can be released, only direct family members can take them home.”
“Then that’s fine. As soon as He Xingzhi comes back, we’ll go to the police station immediately,” Su Xiaoxiao said, patting her chest in relief. She had been worried that the children adopted by the spy might become embroiled in bigger issues, something that ordinary people like them couldn’t resolve.
China’s crackdown on spies was incredibly strict these days, and the thought of it made Su Xiaoxiao’s brow furrow tightly once again. It seemed like too much of a coincidence that the spy responsible for endangering her family had adopted He Xingzhi’s sister, who had been missing for three years. Pushing those thoughts aside, Su Xiaoxiao hurried to the kitchen. “Aunt Guo, can we make some food that’s easy for kids to eat tonight?” she asked, her large, expectant eyes shining as she looked at Aunt Guo, who was preparing dinner.
Without turning her head, Aunt Guo replied, “Sure, I’ll make some egg and corn porridge and stir-fry a couple of light dishes. Are some of your relatives’ children coming over?”
“He Xingzhi’s sister has been found, but she’s still at the police station. We’ll need to wait for her brother to bring her home,” Su Xiaoxiao explained brightly.
Aunt Guo’s hand trembled at the news, causing the spatula to drop into the pan. She didn’t even bother to pick it up, turning around with a look of joy on her face.
“Really? Hongni has really been found?” she asked excitedly.

“Yes! The little girl admitted it herself, so it’s probably true. After He Xingzhi confirms it at the police station, we’ll go to the hospital to get a blood test, and that should be it,” Su Xiaoxiao said with a bright smile.
Aunt Guo nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, yes, Xingzhi definitely has to pick her up himself. We can’t let anything go wrong this time.”
After quickly finishing her current dish, Aunt Guo rushed to prepare food that the children would like.
Not long after, Jiang Yexun and He Xingzhi finally returned. As soon as they saw Su Hongchen sitting in the yard, they didn’t even get a chance to ask what happened before he told them about He Hongni.

Jiang Yexun, on the other hand, didn’t rush after them. Instead, he turned to Su Xiaoxiao, who was smiling sweetly.
“Yexun, let’s go with them. The little girl seems to have some misunderstandings about He Xingzhi, so we should help clear things up,” Su Xiaoxiao said with a resigned expression, glancing up at him.
“Alright,” Jiang Yexun nodded, following her at a leisurely pace as they left the yard together.
Su Hongchen and He Xingzhi were waiting just a little ahead, and when they saw Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun coming, they turned their eyes toward them.
Not wanting to waste time, Su Xiaoxiao hurried over. Since the police station was a bit far, the four of them took a bus to get there.
Su Hongchen had already contacted the police station, so when they arrived, the officers welcomed them and led them inside.
“To avoid frightening the children, they’re all still here with us. Once you’ve taken He Hongni home, the other children will be sent to wherever the higher-ups decide in the coming days,” one of the police officers explained, his voice filled with both pity and helplessness as he recalled how the children had cried and clung to each other.
