“Since you’ve completed the paperwork, let me explain the work situation,” the personnel officer said. “We operate on a three-shift system. The morning shift is from 8 AM to 4 PM, the afternoon shift is from 4 PM to 11 PM, and the night shift is from 11 PM to 4 AM. Everyone rotates weekly. The salary is 25 yuan a month, and it increases slightly with time.”
Luo Shanzhu’s mind immediately started working, “Can I switch shifts with someone? Can the schedule be fixed?”
“The factory doesn’t oppose shift changes, but it’s easier to switch from a good shift to a worse one. It’s hard to switch from a worse shift to a better one. The morning shift is the best, the afternoon shift is slightly worse, and the night shift is the least desirable, unless you’re willing to pay a bit extra,” the personnel officer advised.
“Thank you. I’ll try to ask around and see if I can manage it after I start,” Luo Shanzhu promised eagerly.
After leaving the factory, Luo Shanzhu wanted to share his thoughts with Jiang Yexun but decided against it. Initially, he wanted to switch to the morning shift so he could go hunting in the mountains. However, the round trip would take over three hours by bicycle, which was too exhausting. Jiang Yexun and Luo Shanzhu left the textile factory but didn’t immediately join their family. Instead, Jiang Yexun said to Luo Shanzhu, “I’m taking my brother-in-law to my sister’s house.”
Luo Shanzhu sensed the dismissal in his words and twitched his mouth. He considered responding angrily and heading back himself. However, he realized that returning alone would take three to four hours and he would have to face the dangers alone. So, he smiled and said, “Then I’ll find Uncle Wang at the state-owned restaurant and wait for you to finish before heading back to the village.”
“Okay,” Jiang Yexun responded briefly.

Seeing that Jiang Yexun was not paying him any more attention, Luo Shanzhu forced a smile and left, suppressing his frustration.
Once Luo Shanzhu was out of sight, Jiang Yexun walked over to Su Xiaoxiao and her family.
“Why did you give him the job if you don’t like him?” Su Hongchen asked, puzzled.
Jiang Yexun paused before explaining, “I want to kick him out of my small team so that I won’t have to deal with him later. Giving him a job will make him spend all his savings and encourage him to leave on his own.”
“Is that it?” Su Hongchen raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. “Even if you get all his money, you don’t seem like the type to let him enjoy the job.”
Jiang Yexun replied casually, “He’s in unfamiliar with the city, so if he accidentally offends someone and ends up getting into minor trouble now and then, it’s not like he’d quit his job over small matters.”
“Heh.” Su Hongchen chuckled, unsurprised. That Luo Shanzhu really was an insufferable type. He probably thought no one noticed his scheming, but every time his gaze fell on his sister, there was a clear hint of ill intent—did he really think everyone else was blind?
“Just make sure you keep him in check. I don’t care what you do, but don’t let that mutt lurk around my sister or reach his filthy hands her way. Just looking at him, does he actually think he’s worthy of her?” Su Hongchen’s voice turned cold as he warned Jiang Yexun.
If he weren’t pressed for time, he’d already have found a way to deal with that Luo Shanzhu once and for all. He would make sure the man could have no chance to nurse such perverted thoughts again.
