“Mom, I’ll just stand by the side and watch, I promise I won’t get close to the water,” Su Xiaoxiao said, clinging to Aunt Guo’s arm, playfully whining.
Aunt Guo had no way to refuse her, so she could only helplessly yet lovingly nod. “Alright, then you go with Yexun. But remember what you promised me—don’t get close to the riverbank.”
Seeing her daughter-in-law nod obediently, Aunt Guo, still worried, turned her attention to Jiang Yexun.
“You little rascal, make sure you take good care of Xiaoxiao. Don’t get so caught up in fishing that you forget about your wife and child.”
“Mom, don’t worry. Xiaoxiao is my lifeline, how could I not keep an eye on her?” Jiang Yexun teased as he promised.
Aunt Guo handed him a bamboo basket and some fishing tools, then sent the two of them out the door.
Though they had already registered their marriage, in these times, men and women couldn’t be too affectionate when they went out, so Su Xiaoxiao kept some distance from Jiang Yexun.
But after walking for a while, her thoughts couldn’t help but wander.
“What’s wrong?” Jiang Yexun noticed that his little wife was pulling further away from him and stopped, looking back at her.
He saw her furrowing her beautiful, delicate brows, looking troubled, as if deep in thought.
Su Xiaoxiao lifted her head, meeting Jiang Yexun’s face, which always gave her a sense of peace. After a moment of hesitation, she murmured, “I’m just a little worried about Siyu. I don’t know what Kong Dongfeng’s son is like. Also, Siyu has been here in the village for so many years without finding anyone, and she didn’t really agree with dating within the village. But suddenly, she has a boyfriend, and I just have this feeling that something might have happened.”
Jiang Yexun’s expression turned more serious when he heard this.
“Kong Dongfeng is different from Jiang Guoli—he’s more straightforward and wants everything to be fair. He’s always been good at getting along with people and making alliances. As long as there aren’t any major conflicts, he gets along with everyone. We could tell that from when we took leave to get married in Shanghai. His wife is famous in the area for being beautiful, but she’s also known for being very biased towards men. All her sons are spoiled and a little too much at times. I’ve had to teach them a few lessons in the past, but they settled down afterward. Their youngest son was sent to live with a cousin in a neighboring village, but it seems Kong Dongfeng doesn’t like his own son, so he brought him back. I think this boy is the one Siyu is seeing now. If they’re looking to have sons and keep their family line going, marrying into Kong’s family could be a good match.”
He patiently explained the situation regarding Kong’s family to his wife.
Su Xiaoxiao’s face grew more serious as she listened.
“That’s not good. Qian Siyu’s personality is even tougher than mine. If she stays in this village, she’ll definitely be bullied. Why don’t you check things out? You should look into what kind of reputation Kong Dongfeng’s son had in the other village.”
She walked closer to Jiang Yexun and gently shook his large hand.
“Alright, I’ll arrange it after lunch. We’ll take the opportunity to check on your friend’s situation,” Jiang Yexun said, his body softening under her touch, with no intention of rejecting her.
“Yexun, you’re the best,” Su Xiaoxiao smiled and, making sure no one was looking, stood on tiptoe and planted a kiss on his cheek.
Jiang Yexun instinctively wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her into his embrace, worried she might slip on the ice.
Su Xiaoxiao nestled into his chest, her little face rubbing against his thick cotton coat.
She wrinkled her nose in distaste. “It’s just not as nice through the clothes. It’s so much more comforting when we’re skin-to-skin.”

Jiang Yexun chuckled heartily, “Don’t worry. Let’s hurry up; we’re almost at the riverbank.”
