Chapter 226
She was still torn inside, but finally managed to convince herself this was just a check-up, not an immediate operation.
The examination was over.
The doctor tried to reason with her. “Ms. Cooper, I really can’t recommend surgery. If you lose this child, you may lose your chance at motherhood forever.”
Her body had been weakened before. Even though herbal treatments had given her another chance at pregnancy, she needed to be especially careful.
Surgery, especially.
The baby was still very early, but a miscarriage would do serious harm to her body.
That, in truth, was why Nora had come to the hospital-she still wanted to hold on
to the possibility of being a mother someday.
Nora managed a bitter smile. “Isn’t there any other way?”
The doctor shook her head. “Your body simply can’t handle it.”
Nora placed a hand over her abdomen. In the end, she couldn’t bring herself to do it. “I’ll think about it.”
She just couldn’t let go.
With the report in hand, she left the office.
She had barely stepped into the hallway when a familiar voice caught her attention.
Not far away, Mrs. Chambers had a fistful of another woman’s hair and slapped her hard across the face.
“You shameless little tramp! Always hanging around other people’s husbands!”
A middle-aged man standing next to the woman shoved Mrs. Chambers away, snarling, “Are you out of your mind?”
Mrs. Chambers hit the floor with a heavy thud.
Normally so concerned with appearances, she didn’t scramble to her feet. Instead, she lay there, staring at the man in pain and humiliation.
“Brian Chambers, I am your wife!”
Her voice broke as she screamed his name, full of despair.
Brian looked at her with nothing but disgust. “If you hadn’t been dragging this out, we’d have been divorced ages ago.”
“You-”
“Lilian Zade Chambers, I told you long ago: let’s get divorced, give each other some freedom. But you insist on clinging to that title.”
Tears streamed down Mrs. Chambers’ face.
She tried to stand, but the fall had twisted her ankle. She couldn’t get up.
All her pride and dignity had shattered right there on the hospital floor.
She’d fought so hard for her marriage, but what had it brought her? Her husband’s betrayal and now, his public humiliation.
Whispers rippled through the corridor.
“Why’s Mrs. Chambers still sitting there? Is she trying to blackmail Brian or something?”
The young woman at Brian’s side covered her mouth, giggling prettily.
Mrs. Chambers clenched her teeth in fury, but she couldn’t move.
Just as despair threatened to swallow her, a hand reached under her arm- steady and strong, helping her up.
She turned and stared, stunned, into a familiar face.
“Nora?” ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ꜰʀᴏᴍ
Nora ignored her, her gaze cold as she looked at the couple in front of her.
The middle-aged man-Brian-was Daniel’s biological father, the eldest son of the Chambers family. He’d inherited all of Hogan Chambers’ notorious charm and reckless behavior. His scandals had nearly destroyed his marriage to Mrs. Chambers.
Mr. Hogan Chambers himself had finally stepped in, cutting Brian out of the family business and leaving him with nothing but a meaningless position at the company.
Brian hadn’t been home since.
The woman at his side was probably just his latest fling.
Nora had only met Brian once, at the awkward family dinner when she’d first married Daniel. She’d known he was a cheater, but not that he’d stoop so low as to strike a woman.
“Aurora? No, Nora.” Brian finally recognized her.
He was still a handsome man-fifty, perhaps, but distinguished, charming, the kind of man women noticed.
He pointed at Mrs. Chambers and barked an order at Nora. “Take this crazy woman home. Don’t make a scene here.”
