Monica slipped her arm through Eleanor’s and leaned in, her voice pitched low and full of concern. “I heard you stayed up all night working on that fragrance test. Dan was worried about you, said no one was to disturb you.”
Just then, Aurora was being carried inside by the housekeeper under Jordan’s direction and gently laid down on the sofa. She happened to catch Monica’s words, grateful for once that she could feign unconsciousness-at least she didn’t have to witness Daniel’s tender concern for Eleanor.
Eleanor suddenly seemed to notice Aurora. “What happened to Aurora?”
Monica launched into a dramatic explanation, her tone carefully crafted.

She hesitated, then added, “It’s all my fault.” Guilt laced her voice. “But if Aurora’s pregnant, why didn’t she say anything?”
Monica crossed her arms and spoke up deliberately, “Obviously, the Winters family wants nothing to do with her.” The implication was clear: Daniel was just Aurora’s backup plan.
Jordan motioned for a servant to bring some water.
Daniel’s expression was unreadable. “I need to get back to the office. Put her in my car; I’ll take her to the hospital.”
Jordan only hesitated a moment before agreeing-after all, he was supposed to be the dutiful father right now.
Both Eleanor and Monica were taken aback.
“I thought we were supposed to have dinner-why are you leaving so suddenly?” Eleanor protested.
“Let the housekeeper take her,” Monica insisted, not about to let Daniel and Aurora be alone together. “She’s not your responsibility anymore.”
Daniel’s gaze darkened, his lips tight with barely concealed irritation. “Monica, if you want to be Mrs. Chambers, you should try being a little more gracious.”

Eleanor nudged Monica. “Why don’t you go with him, Monica?”
But Daniel had already scooped Aurora into his arms and started for the door. “No need.”
Monica’s eyes burned with frustrated tears. She could see right through Daniel’s excuse about going to the office he just wanted to take Aurora to the hospital himself. He still cared about Aurora. The memory of what she’d seen in the parking lot flashed through her mind. It had to be Aurora scheming something again.
She turned to Jordan. “Dan and Aurora will get divorced soon. I think you should start arranging a marriage for Aurora.”

Mrs. Quinn shot her husband a cold look; she’d had enough of his calculations, and she certainly wasn’t going to let him take Aurora’s side again. She weighed the Winters family’s stance carefully. “If you’re really so keen to cozy up to the Winters, you’d better be ready for our whole family to end up back in Millbrook.” Jordan sobered at that, the implications sending a chill down his spine.
Monica pressed her advantage. “The best thing now is to get Aurora married off as soon as possible. That’ll put the Winters family’s mind at ease.”
Eleanor nodded sweetly. “That way Monica and Dan can finally get married, Daddy. Monica did promise to bring in a fifty-million investment.”
That settled it-Jordan’s loyalties immediately shifted to Monica. He turned to Mrs. Quinn. “You handle it.”
On the drive to the hospital, Daniel glanced at Aurora, who was still leaning against the window with her eyes closed. His voice was cold. “You can stop pretending now.”
He’d seen through her act from the start.
Aurora sat up, rubbing her forehead.
The car was stopped at a red light, the air conditioner humming, keeping the summer heat at bay.
Daniel’s tone was biting. “Louis is the Winters family’s eldest son, so his son is the family’s first grandson. Now the kid’s dying and the Winters family hasn’t even shown up. Looks like Louis isn’t all that important to them after all.”
Aurora was too exhausted to argue, her voice barely above a whisper. “Payne is my son.”
She would find a way to save him-she had to. As for the Winters family, she’d never really counted on them.
“Does Louis know you came here, begging on your knees for your child?” Daniel’s eyes were glacial as he stared straight ahead.
