She did as she was told-and managed to convince Daniel.
A marriage as mismatched as theirs, Daniel had clung to it for three years, only to find himself developing feelings for Aurora over time.
Her heart was a tangled mess.
Suddenly, the doors to the emergency room swung open.
Grandma Grace was wheeled out by a doctor.
“It was a close call, but she’s stable,” the doctor announced, pulling off his mask and glancing around at the anxious faces. “She’s elderly, so it’s best to avoid any more emotional shocks.”
“Thank you so much.” Aurora stood in front of him and bowed her head deeply, her gratitude sincere. “Thank you for saving my grandmother.”
The doctor quickly stepped back, embarrassed by the formality. He certainly didn’t feel worthy of such a gesture from Mrs. Chambers.
Aurora hurried after the nurses as they took Grandma Grace to her hospital room.
Night had fallen. Aurora sat by the bedside, clutching Grandma Grace’s hand, refusing to leave her side.
Daniel arrived with a late-night snack, softly coaxing Aurora to eat a few bites.
But Aurora’s entire focus was on her grandmother. She wouldn’t even look at Daniel, much less speak to him.
Daniel’s gaze darkened, his voice rough with emotion. “Aurora, I didn’t mean to stand in your way. I just thought you-”
He couldn’t finish the sentence. The damage was already done; any explanation now was pointless.
Faint red marks still lingered on her face.
“I brought some ointment. Let me help you, okay?” Daniel took out the small jar, dabbing a little on his fingertip as he reached for her cheek.
Aurora flinched away, her long hair falling to shield half her face.

Daniel gently brushed her hair aside, his tone soft and patient. “I know you can’t stand me. But your face needs to be treated.”
Aurora replied coolly, “That’s really none of your concern, Mr. Chambers.”
Every syllable of “Mr. Chambers” drew a line between them.
“Aurora-”
“Daniel, Grandma needs to rest. Could you please leave?” Aurora cut him off.
Daniel looked at the still-unconscious woman in the hospital bed, the rest of his words dying in his throat.
“Alright. I’ll go.” He relented. “You barely touched your dinner
“I said, leave.” The irritation in Aurora’s voice had reached its peak.
A slap and then a sweet apology-she was sick of it, sick to her core.
Daniel stood in silence for a few seconds, then said quietly, “I’ll be right outside. If you need anything, call me.”
“Wait.” Aurora’s voice stopped him as he reached the door.
Startled, Daniel turned, hope flickering in his eyes. “Aurora?”
“Give me my phone,” she said, expression blank, hand outstretched.
Daniel pressed his lips together and handed it back to her.
Without another glance, Aurora took the phone.
Daniel lingered for a moment, then slipped silently from the room.
Aurora powered on her phone. Dozens of messages flooded in at once, causing it
to freeze for several minutes before it finally settled down.
She deleted everything with a single swipe, replying only to Warner.
Warner called immediately. “Are you alright?”
Aurora’s voice was quiet. “You said you knew a really good divorce attorney. Could you send me their contact information?”
Warner was silent for two seconds. “You’ve made up your mind?”
“I have.”
Aurora lowered her gaze, her long lashes casting shadows across her cheeks.
Just as Samuel had said, she’d only ever been a placeholder. Now that the real leading lady was back, it was her turn to step aside.
Whether Daniel agreed or not-that would be up to the lawyer’s skill.
“Alright, I’ll send it to you,” Warner promised, forwarding the contact.
“His name’s Winters. He’s still overseas at the moment, but he’ll be back soon,” Warner explained. “You can discuss your situation with him directly.”
Aurora hesitated. “If he finds out the divorce is with Daniel, will he still take the case?”
In Fairvale, most attorneys turned her down the moment Daniel’s name was mentioned.
The last lawyer who’d drafted her settlement papers had even deleted her contact info.
She didn’t want to waste more time and energy.
Warner reassured her, “He’s handled plenty of high-profile divorces. And I’ll help you too. Don’t worry.”
Aurora finally felt at ease. She added the attorney’s contact and waited for his reply.
