He turned away to mingle with the other guests.
Daniel remained seated, his face dark and stormy, a shadow settling in his eyes.
Not far away, Eleanor stood frozen, her face drained of color. So Warner was Mr. Frost’s grandson.
When had Aurora managed to forge such a connection? No wonder she had been so calm when she left the Chambers Group; it all made sense now.
Until today, Eleanor had never truly regarded Aurora as anything more than a country girl, someone who-despite sharing her blood-could never erase the marks of her upbringing.
But today, that same country girl had revealed another side of herself, striking Eleanor with an unexpected blow.
She walked over slowly, her voice soft. “Dan, what’s wrong?”
Daniel snapped out of his thoughts, glanced at his watch, and stood up. “I’ll have the driver take you home.”
Now that Mr. Frost clearly favored Aurora, Eleanor’s presence here meant nothing.
She nodded obediently.
At the door, however, she caught sight of Aurora and Warner.
Warner said something she couldn’t hear, and Aurora laughed softly, her whole expression warm and gentle.
Warner opened the car door for her, evidently offering her a ride.
“It’s Aurora Eleanor murmured.
Daniel was already striding over, grabbing Aurora’s wrist and pulling her to his side, his gaze cold as he faced Warner.
“There’s no need to trouble Mr. Frost.”
Warner looked at Aurora with gentle concern. “And you?”
He’d leave the choice to her.
Aurora didn’t want to see Warner and Daniel come to blows.
“I’ll go with Mr. Chambers-we’re headed the same way.”
The driver pulled the car around, and Aurora slipped into the front seat, leaving the back for Daniel and Eleanor.
Daniel’s eyes were dark as he instructed the driver to take Eleanor home first.
Aurora said her goodbyes to Warner.
The car pulled away.
Left behind, Warner stood on the curb, looking crestfallen.
An elderly man walked over and patted Warner’s shoulder. “Aurora is one of the most talented people I’ve ever met.”
Warner gave a mock gasp. “One of the most? Don’t tell me you mean me, Grandpa?”
Mr. Frost shot his grandson a look and sighed deeply, his expression tinged with nostalgia. “I was thinking of someone else… What a shame.”
Warner knew his grandfather still hadn’t moved past that old regret. He grew serious. “I’ll find the person you’re talking about, Grandpa. I promise.”
In his lifetime, Mr. Frost had taken on two apprentices: one, Catherine, now renowned worldwide, and another… someone who had disappeared many years ago.

Daniel stood by the car, his dark eyes fixed on Aurora, clearly waiting for her decision.
Aurora didn’t want to go back inside, and was about to ask the driver to leave. Fiona approached the car window and spoke softly, “You’re already here, dear. Won’t you at least come in to see your grandmother?”
Aurora’s fingers tightened around her dress. She knew Fiona was only using her grandmother as an excuse to keep Daniel around, but she couldn’t bring herself to refuse she missed her grandmother, too.
She stepped out of the car, gathered up her skirt, and headed inside.
Daniel followed at a leisurely pace.
Aurora asked a maid where her grandmother was, and, hearing she was in the garden, made her way there.
Jordan invited Daniel to the sitting room for tea, but Daniel declined, trailing after Aurora toward the garden.
Fiona looked a bit surprised. “Dan seems different these days.”
Jordan’s expression was complicated. Daniel had always gone straight to the sitting room when visiting, only stopping by to greet Grandma Grace on his way out.
He thought back to the incident at the hospital and couldn’t help but wonder about Daniel’s feelings for Aurora.
In the garden, Grandma Grace, her hair a snowy silver, broke into a huge smile when she saw Aurora. When she spotted Daniel following close behind, her delight grew.
Aurora’s happiness in marriage was her greatest wish now.
