Chapter 335
Nora’s face was unreadable. “What is it?”
Mrs. Chambers opened her mouth several times before finally pushing out two words, her voice barely above a whisper. “Thank you.”
The words seemed to lift a weight from her shoulders, and she exhaled, lighter somehow.
“Thank you,” she repeated, this time with genuine sincerity.
Nora lowered her head again. “There’s no need to thank me. I don’t like her.”
She didn’t bother to sugarcoat it.
Mrs. Chambers made a quiet sound of acknowledgment. “Don’t be fooled by Donna’s friendly face. She’s got a vicious streak. It’s best if you steer clear of her.”
Nora nodded. “I understand.”
That was about as much as Mrs. Chambers could bring herself to say. She turned to leave, only to find Judy standing quietly behind her, uncertain how long she’d been there. Follow current novels on.net
Mrs. Chambers walked past Judy without a word, her expression frosty.
Judy looked a bit awkward but managed to carry a small plate of fruit to Nora anyway.
She set the fruit in front of her. “Mrs. Chambers.”
Nora frowned at the title and corrected her, “We haven’t remarried.”
“Oh.” Judy nodded, sitting down across from her and immediately absorbing herself in her phone.
In the study upstairs, Donna’s brow was tightly knit. “Dan, he’s still your father, no matter what. How could you leave him with nothing? After the divorce, it should be Lilian who moves out.”
Daniel leaned against the window, his voice cool. “You know how he treated me growing up, Aunt Donna. Even if you haven’t seen it firsthand, you must have heard some stories. Letting him go with an allowance is more mercy than he deserves.”
“He’s your father, and you’re still holding a grudge?” Donna couldn’t understand. “He just likes to have a little fun, that’s all.”
“And Eleanor—if that’s how it’s going to be, let’s bring her into the family officially,” Donna continued, planning out loud. “Her engagement to Hans needs to be protected. We can’t risk the partnership between our families.”
Daniel didn’t agree. “She still goes by Quinn.”
“Changing her last name isn’t hard,” Donna said, her tone softening. “Dan, I know you care about your mother and you’re worried she’ll be upset if Eleanor moves in, but every family wants harmony, right?”
“All these years, you’ve had no siblings. When something happens, who will help you? Having Eleanor in the family is a good thing.”
But Daniel still wouldn’t yield.
He was willing to help his half-sister, but he’d never considered making her a Chambers.
Donna was starting to lose patience. “Lilian’s spent all these years unable to win your father’s heart, and she wouldn’t let him have another child. Isn’t that selfish? Are you going to be just like her and let this family wither away?”
Her words were harsh and dramatic.
Mr. Hogan Chambers cleared his throat. “Donna, let Dan handle this. You don’t need to get involved.”
Reluctantly, Donna fell silent. After a moment, she changed the subject.
“I heard you shut down the perfume line?” Donna’s usually gentle expression had hardened as she confronted Daniel.
“Aunt Donna, I’m restructuring that division,” Daniel replied calmly.
Donna’s tone sharpened. “Nora’s Mr. Frost’s protégé, and yet she can’t even manage this?”
“It has nothing to do with Aurora,” Daniel said. “It was my decision.”
“Let Judy take over the perfume division,” Donna decided. “Don’t touch the production line for now.”
“Aunt-”
“Dan, the perfume business was my idea in the first place. If you think it’s a burden, let Judy handle it. I’ll take full responsibility for the profits and losses.”
It was true; Donna had insisted on the perfume division from the start. But it had always been mediocre, eventually falling to the wayside.
After Daniel married Nora, the division landed in Nora’s hands.
