Chapter 1480
[ 614 words ]
Playing the martyr?
Harold took the words in and silently memorized them.
At the entrance of the villa.
Theia and Silas had prepared a mountain of gifts for Lorelei.
Most of them were intended for Harold’s adoptive parents and old Mrs. Bellamy.
“Thank you, Mom, Dad. You’re so thoughtful,” Lorelei said, deeply touched.
“We’re glad.”
Theia patted Lorelei’s hand, her voice gentle. “As long as you’re happy, we support whatever you do. We will always be your parents.”
“Yeah.”
Lorelei nodded, a hint of sadness in her expression. She knew they were subtly referring to the impending divorce.
Theia then shot a glare at Harold, dropping her voice to a fierce whisper. “I adore Lori. I don’t care what you have to do, you better not lose her.”
“I won’t.”
Harold nodded, his tone dead serious. “I’m going to do everything I can.”
He wanted to lose Lorelei less than anyone else in the world.
Two days later.
The Schwartz Group’s private jet touched down at Australis Airport.
After several days of rest, coupled with Juniper’s custom-formulated medication, Lorelei was finally able to walk on her own, albeit slowly.
“Mr. Houston.”
The Houston family’s bodyguards were waiting respectfully by the exit. “Mrs. Houston.”
“Head to the house first,” Harold instructed firmly as he got into the car.
“Aren’t we going to see your parents first?” Lorelei turned her head to ask.
“We just got off a long flight. Rest first.” Harold took off his jacket and draped it over her. “It won’t matter if we see them a little later.”
“Oh.”
Lorelei didn’t question his decision. She was genuinely exhausted, leaning back against the seat and closing her eyes for a nap.
The drive back was quite long, and Lorelei unknowingly drifted off to sleep.
She still hadn’t woken up by the time the car pulled to a stop.
“Sir—” The driver turned back to speak to Harold but was instantly silenced by a sharp look from the man.
The driver wisely snapped his mouth shut and carefully opened the car door. Harold stepped out first, then gently reached in and lifted Lorelei into his arms. The staff inside the house stared with their jaws practically hitting the floor. Since when were the young master and his wife so deeply in love?
They clearly remembered the last time the two were in the same room; they had acted like they wanted to be on opposite ends of the earth.
During her three-day stay at the villa before, they hadn’t exchanged more than ten words combined.
After laying Lorelei down.
Harold rubbed his wrist and walked into the living room. The housekeeper stepped forward. “Sir, a call from your father.”
“Leave us.”
Harold took the phone, his face expressionless. “Father.”
“You’re back?”
“Yes.”
“There’s a gala in Australis tomorrow Everyone from your generation will be there.” Faulkner’s voice was deep and commanded authority. “Since you’re back take Lorelei with you.
“Alright.”
Harold agreed in a low voice. “But I need to swing by the institute first to handle something.”
“Then have Lorelei go ahead first. You can’t both be late and have the rest of the city gossiping about the Houstons.”
“Understood.” Harold’s tone
remained flat. Just before hanging
up, Faulkner spoke again. Come
me and your mother after you’re
meand
done. We have something to discuss with you.”
“Okay.”
Ending the call, Harold handed the phone back to the housekeeper and casually instructed, Let her sleep. When she wakes up, tell her bhad an emergency at the institute
“I’ll head to the gala as soon as I finish up there.”
“O-Of course.” The housekeeper was thoroughly shocked but couldn’t hide her joy.
Not only had he come home, but he was also escorting his wife to a party.
It seemed the young madam’s dark days were finally over.
“Also-“
Harold took a few steps, then suddenly stopped, his gaze fixing on the housekeeper.
“Has she not been eating? Why has she lost so much weight?”
