Chapter 1560
[ 668 words ]
Janet gripped her bag tightly, struggling to stay composed and offer a polite smile.
“Did you need something? If not, I was just heading to the library.”
The smile on Melvin’s face stiffened, his eyes turning complex.
During the time they had spent together recently, she had clearly become much less guarded around him.
It hadn’t even been that long, yet she had reverted right back?
“Are you just really exhausted lately?” Melvin reached out to touch her bag. “It’s right about dinnertime anyway. Let’s eat and talk.”
“No, thanks.”
Janet took a step back, dodging his touch. Hiding the sorrow in her eyes, she said softly, “I have to prep for midterms coming up, so I probably won’t have time to handle your company’s tasks. You should find a professional to do it.”
“Also…”
Janet pursed her lips, her voice turning slightly raspy. “Your status is pretty unique. When you keep coming to the school to find me, it causes problems for me.”
“Other girls are always asking me about you, wanting your number or your social media. It puts me in a really difficult spot.”
“And so?”
Melvin caught the underlying meaning in her words, his voice turning husky. “You’re saying I shouldn’t come to your school anymore. In fact, it’s best if I don’t come looking for you at all, right?”
Was she trying to draw a clear line between them?
“Janet, did something happen?” Melvin’s face paled.
“No.”
Janet bit her lip. She wasn’t willing to tear through the paper-thin window of her unrequited crush and humiliate herself.
“It’s just a heavy course load. I don’t want to waste time on other things.” Meeting him was a waste of time?
Melvin had no idea what could have happened to cause such a drastic shift in her attitude.
But seeing how pale and exhausted she looked, he couldn’t bear to press her further. He simply said:
“Alright. I actually have to leave for an overseas business trip soon anyway. When I get back, we’ll have a proper talk.”
This trip was crucial; he absolutely had to go.
Once he returned.
He would lay everything out clearly.
“Have a safe trip.”
Janet spoke softly, completely ignoring his suggestion about talking later.
“One more thing,” Melvin reminded her again. “Kian is not a good person. Don’t get too close to him.”
“I know.” Janet nodded. “There will never be anything between me and him.”
That was a relief.
From what he had gathered, this was the only “rumored boyfriend” buzzing around her.
As long as he kept that guy away, it was fine.
“If you ever run into any trouble, you can always talk to Juniper.”
Melvin tilted his chin toward her, his voice uncharacteristically gentle. “Go study. I’II bring you a gift when I get back.”
“Okay.” Janet kept her head down, afraid to look at his face.
She walked past him in silence, leaving without a single glance backward.
Watching her retreating figure, a frustrated Melvin pinched the bridge of his nose.
What exactly went wrong?
Over the following week.
Melvin flew out of the country and truly didn’t contact Janet again.
Janet wilted like a frostbitten flower. Partially because of her papers, she spent nights wide awake, looking as if her very soul had been drained away.
“You haven’t been looking well lately. Is something on your mind?” Juniper asked with concern as they walked to campus together, noticing Janet’s terrible complexion fo FindNovel.net
“Yeah, there’s just so much reading to do. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed.”
Janet rubbed her eyes, answering guiltily. She couldn’t exactly admit that she was losing sleep over missing Melvin.
Deep down, she really wanted to ask Juniper who the girl Melvin liked was. But on second thought, what right did she have to ask?
“Make sure you get enough rest.” Juniper pulled a small white bottle from ber bag. This is a sleep supplement. It’s perfectly safe. If you can’t fall asleep, you can take one.”
“Thank you, Juniper,” Janet accepted it, murmuring an apology. Juniper stared at her, hesitating, but ultimately didn’t push the issue.
Melvin had mentioned that Janet’s attitude toward him had turned icy cold overnight Juniper wondered if it was genuinely due to academic pressure, or something else entirely.
