Chapter 1070
[ 614 words ]
“Juniper Payne—”
Sheryl’s knuckles turned white as she clenched her fists. She lifted her chin, ready to launch into a tirade, but the crowd cut her off.
“They’re not wrong. If the med school professors knew you couldn’t identify a textbook seizure, they’d probably drop dead from sheer disappointment.”
“Hey, keep your voice down. Are you talking about Sheryl?”
“You got a death wish? Her dad is on the university board! He could have you expelled by lunchtime.”
“Oh, gee, my deepest apologies, Ms. Yardley,” a guy drawled with heavy sarcasm. “We shouldn’t have pointed out that you’re all designer labels and zero brain cells.”
“Hey, what hospital are you working at after graduation? Just so I know where absolutely never to go if I’m dying.”
“Pfft-“
The flawless execution of the insult earned a chorus of laughter from the onlookers. The sharp, mocking giggles grated against Sheryl’s eardrums. The fury building in her chest was one second away from a volcanic eruption.
“Sheryl, don’t waste your breath on them,” one of her sycophant friends whispered, grabbing her arm and muttering something in her ear.
Sheryl’s twisted expression smoothed out slightly. A smug, venomous smile crept onto her lips as she glared at Juniper. “You all better pray your precious Goddess stays on her little pedestal. Because the second she falls…”
She let the threat hang. If Juniper ever stumbled, Sheryl would make sure every single person who had mocked her today went down too.
“Watch your mouth,” the dance major shot back. “My idol is smart, strong, and actually has a good heart. She’s going to be just fine.”
“Unlike some nepotism baby who uses her dad’s name as a personality. Karma’s a bitch, you know.”
“You…” Sheryl grounded her teeth, her eyes sweeping over the crowd like a sniper picking targets. “Let’s wait and see who karma comes for first.”
With that, she hoisted her bag onto her shoulder and stormed off, her high heels clicking furiously against the pavement.
…
“You guys have some nerve,” a timid bystander muttered once Sheryl was out of earshot. “Aren’t you worried she’ll run crying to her dad?”
“We didn’t say anything that wasn’t true,” the dance major reasoned, though she looked a little rattled. “Besides, she only got in because of connections. She doesn’t know the first thing about medicine.”
“Seriously, I shudder to think how many innocent patients she’s going to accidentally kill in the future.”
“You’re not wrong. The Yardley family has deep pockets. She’ll definitely get placed in a top-tier hospital.”
A heavy silence fell over the group.
“I wouldn’t be so sure. Let’s see if she even manages to graduate first,” Juniper drawled, lazily opening a bag of chips.
The students turned to her, their eyes wide with awe.
“Goddess, did you actually study medicine?!” one of them blurted out.
Juniper raised an eyebrow, her gaze sweeping lazily over the speaker.
“My grandpa is an old-school holistic healer,” a guy in the crowd volunteered confidently “Your needle technique was sharp and decisive. You don’t get that good without at least a few years of practice.”
“I picked up a few things,” Juniper replied vaguely. She grabbed a pen,
scribbled down an address, and
handed it to the girl who had
collapsed. He can treat
your
condition. Drop my name, and the
consultations are free.”
“Thank you so much, Goddess!” The girl took the paper with both hands, her eyes shining with gratitude.
“Alright, show’s over.”
With the drama handled, Juniper headed back to her classroom.
She had barely taken her seat when her phone buzzed.
It was a message from Felton:

investigation you requested.
Juniper opened her email, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the documents.
Plastic surgery?
Specialized grooming?
Interesting. Very interesting.
After skimming the photos, Juniper typed a quick reply: [Look into the Yardleys while
you’re at it. I bet they’re dirty too.]
