Chapter 1193
[ 593 words ]
Ebony Fox pressed her lips together, deciding she didn’t have the energy to argue. She turned around to look at Shanley, who was blankly spinning his red sandalwood bracelet, and frowned. “I want to hear your plan.”
“Alright.”
Shanley snapped out of his daze, his deep, magnetic voice slowly laying out the strategy.
…
Under a different patch of sky.
It had just rained, leaving the atmosphere thick and gray.
An elegant estate sat quietly within a picturesque, secluded town.
Juniper had been held hostage here for exactly half a month.
The genetic modification research was on the verge of completion.
By her calculations, Shanley would most likely make his move today.
Honestly, she hadn’t seen him in days, and she was starting to miss the old fox.
She wondered if he was behaving himself in front of her parents.
“Miss Specter.”
Nadia opened the door, her face an unreadable mask. “The five test subjects have returned. The boss requests your presence.”
“Sure.”
Juniper stood up and took a step toward the door when the woman suddenly spoke up. “Apologies, but we need to take precautions.”
As she spoke, Nadia pulled out a specialized set of restraints, locking both Juniper’s wrists and ankles.
She was the leader of the Subterra Vanguard, after all. Her skills were legendary.
They couldn’t afford to underestimate her.
Juniper ‘obediently’ wore the shackles, following Nadia into the secondary lab.
This was the core of Corvus’s operation.
Mountains of data and experimental results were centralized here.
“Your research direction was flawless.” Corvus sat at the head of the table, flipping through the latest performance metrics of the test subjects, a broad smile plastered across his face. “All five subjects are exhibiting superhuman capabilities.”
“Since that’s the case, does this mean you’ve finalized the optimal formula?” “Yes.”
Juniper leaned lazily against the sofa, the picture of calm. “I still have a little data to crunch. I’ll have the final conclusion for you before the sun comes up tomorrow.”
“When you see it, I guarantee you’ll be blown away.”
“Excellent.” Corvus nodded, beaming. “Specter, as long as you complete the genetic modification research, you have my word. I’ll hand over the antidote formula and let Silas Blackwood live.”
“Can you really keep that promise?”
Juniper stared at him, her dark eyes unreadable, a faint smile playing on her lips.
“Of course.”
Corvus gave a plastic smile, answering with absolute composure.

Why kill him when he could let him live to watch his own wife and daughter become Corvus’s family?
It would utterly break Silas.
Imagining Theia and Juniper willingly staying by his side, a dark, triumphant gleam flashed in Corvus’s eyes.
“Right.”
Juniper smiled mockingly, clearly not buying a single word of his garbage. “If you don’t cough up that
you.”

Corvcoffed coldly. “If you were…
really that dangerous, you wouldn’t be my prisoner right now.”
“Try me.”
Juniper wasn’t in the mood to bicker. She turned and headed toward the inner lab.
She just had to stall.
Wait for Shanley to show up and start the fireworks.
6:00 PM.
The sky began to darken. The guards assigned to watch her were yawning, their vigilance visibly slipping.
Yawning, really?
Someone was about to come collect their lives, and they were yawning.
Juniper finished her dinner and paced around the room holding a fruit platter.
What was taking him so long?
Was he waiting for full dark to strike?
Right on cue.
As the last light faded from the sky, someone outside screamed, “The warehouse is on fire! Get the extinguishers!”
Juniper’s grip on her computer mouse tightened, and the corners of her lips curled up.
He was here.
Shanley was finally here.
