Chapter 1210
[ 594 words ]
At the Schwartz family estate.
Shanley and Juniper walked into the grand foyer, expecting to be greeted by his grandparents and parents.
“Where are my parents and grandparents?” Shanley asked as he guided Juniper to a sofa. He had called ahead. Normally, they would all be waiting at the door. This was unusual.
“They’re looking for something. They specifically told us not to go upstairs to clean,” a maid answered carefully.
What could possibly be more important than welcoming their future granddaughter- in-law?
“Let’s go take a look.” Shanley took Juniper’s hand and led her upstairs.
As they approached his grandparents’ suite, they heard an argument.
“Kent, what do you think of this one?” his grandmother asked.
“It’s perfect,” Kent Schwartz agreed.
“Perfect? What are you talking about?” she snapped, mercilessly critiquing him. “You men have zero taste. This bracelet is an antique, but it looks too dated. It definitely won’t suit my granddaughter-in-law.”
Kent stood by the door, his arms full of jewelry boxes, wearing the weary smile of a man who knew he couldn’t win.
“What about this?” His grandmother held up a diamond necklace so brilliant it was almost blinding.
“Well…” Having been scolded enough times to know better, Kent answered cautiously. “Maybe that one’s a bit too much?”
“I told you that you were blind!” she huffed, doubling down on her critique. “A stunning diamond like this deserves to be on my beautiful granddaughter-in-law’s neck.”
Kent let out a long, heavy sigh, completely defeated.
Before Shanley and Juniper could announce themselves, the voices of Hayden Schwartz and Miranda Zuniga drifted from the room at the end of the hall.
“Hurry up and move this one out!”
“I’m moving it, honey, I’m moving it,” Hayden grumbled, carrying a massive chest overflowing with jewels, his forehead beaded with sweat.
“And get this box of gold out too,” Miranda ordered loudly. “We’ve finally made it to the engagement. phase! Lam making sure this is a spectacular affair. Our wedding gifts cannot be anything less than extraordinary. Wait, where is that
lockbox with the real estate deeds? Where did you put it?”
“How should I know?” Hayden, exhausted from playing the pack mule, was panting
as he leaned against the wall to catch his breath. Suddenly, he looked up and saw
his future daughter-in-law and his son standing right there.
“Mr. Schwartz,” Juniper greeted politely, stepping forward. “What are you and Miranda doing?”
“We’re just— Oof!” Before Hayden could finish, a wildly excited Miranda practically shoved him out of the way.
“Juniper, you’re here!” Miranda
grabbed Juniper’s hands, beaming as she pulled her into the room. She pointed at the staggering mountain of boxes and chests piled on the floor and tables. Do you like them? These are the wedding gifts Hayden and I prepared for you.”
Juniper looked around the room. There were several actual chests of gold. Not to mention the countless diamonds, vintage artwork, antiques, and a dazzling stack of property deeds.
“I…” Juniper had seen her fair share of wealth, but even she was overwhelmed by Miranda’s enthusiasm. If she didn’t know better, she’d think they had just robbed a royal treasury.
“You don’t like it?” Miranda frowned slightly when Juniper didn’t immediately respond. “Don’t worry, I have another vault full of treasures.” She turned, ready to dive into the safe room.
“No, Miranda, wait,” Juniper caught her arm. “You really don’t need to do all this.”
“Of course I do!” Miranda insisted, launching into an impassioned speech. “Marrying Shanley is doing that boy the biggest favor of his life. Our family doesn’t have much to offer besides money. I promise you, I will never let you feel slighted, and I definitely won’t give your parents any reason to worry.”
