Chapter 1214
[ 574 words ]
Over the next few days, Juniper practically lived in the lab, frantically searching for an alternative while keeping tabs on the hunt for Corvus.
Despite the combined might of the Sigma Network and Subterra Vanguard tearing the city apart, Corvus seemed to have vanished off the face of the earth.
“Dad only has three pills left.” Harold set a glass of lemon water next to Juniper.
Three pills meant six days.
In six days, without the permanent cure, Silas’s fever would spike, and he would burn alive.
“Still no sign of Corvus?” Juniper asked, her brow furrowed. “That doesn’t make sense.”
He purposely gave them only a twenty-day supply. Wasn’t it obvious he wanted to use Silas’s life as leverage to control her again?
As time ticked down, if Silas died, Corvus would lose his only bargaining chip.
“Nothing,” Harold shook his head grimly. “Both networks are doing everything they can, but the trail is completely dead.”
“Got it.” Juniper rubbed her temples. Just as the anxiety threatened to boil over, her phone rang.
It was her mother.
“Juniper,” Theia’s cheerful voice came through the speaker. “Are you still at the lab? I cooked a big meal. Bring Harold and come home.”
“We’ve all been reunited for a while now, but we haven’t sat down for a proper family dinner yet.”
Ever since she was told the antidote was coming along, Theia’s mood had visibly brightened.
“We’re on our way,” Juniper promised. As she walked out, she sent a quick text to Shanley at his corporate headquarters: *Mom is hosting a family dinner.*
He replied instantly: *We aren’t officially engaged yet. Would it be appropriate if I crashed?*
*Come or don’t. I don’t care.*
*I’m coming.* Shanley was grinning like a fool as he stood up, glancing at the stunned executives around the boardroom table. “Meeting adjourned early. Have a good evening.”
“Yes, sir.” The executives nodded, smiling widely.
Ever since Mr. Schwartz announced his engagement, the entire company felt like a summer breeze.
Did your job right? Bonus.
Signed a new contract? Bonus.
Breathed oxygen? Bonus.
The corporate ladder was practically paved with cash. Everyone loved coming to work these days.
At the Sigma Network base.
Jimmie, Harold, Melvin, Ebony Fox, Celine and her husband, Coralie, Juniper, and her un-engaged fiancé were all gathered around the massive table.
“Sit down, everyone.” Theia had changed into an elegant dress, her hair beautifully styled. She looked radiant and refined.
They took their seats.
“This family dinner is sixteen years overdue, Theia said softly, looking at her children with overwhelming affection. “You all know bits and pieces of our past but you probably don’t know the full truth.
The siblings nodded, giving her their full attention.
“Tonight, I’m going to tell you everything.” Theia let out a heavy sigh. Years ago your father and were top researchers for Albia Country, specializing in human genetics.”
“We thought we were doing God’s work, trying to better humanity. But we discovered Albia was using our research for horrifying, unethical purposes.”
“Furious, Silas and I tried to destroy the entire lab. Unfortunately-” Her voice broke, and her eyes grew wet. “Corvus… the boy adopted by your grandfather. He had been secretly colluding with Albia, planning to use, our gene-editing tech for massive financial gain.”
“They locked us up. Because our genetics were uniquely compatible, Albia and Corvus extracted our DNA and implanted it into surrogates to create the first six of you.”
Jimmie and the others stared in stunned silence.
No wonder. They had always assumed their parents just never watched TV at night. To have seven kids? Now it made sense.
