Chapter 1276

[ 625 words ]

“And one more thing,” Luella bowed deeply toward her mother’s plaque, her voice thick with emotion. “Eat and drink well on the other side. Don’t worry about me.”

“I’m doing great. I have an amazing best friend, and I have a new family now. I’m really, really happy.”

“Mom, can you hear me?”

Luella’s throat felt raw, her voice trembling slightly.

She really missed her mom.

*Whoosh_*

As if hearing Luella’s words, a delicate piece of memorial paper resting on the altar suddenly caught a phantom breeze. It fluttered gracefully through the air before landing gently on Luella’s shoulder.

Luella touched it carefully, her eyes brimming with tears.

Before leaving.

Luella made sure to double-lock all the doors to the Memorial Hall from the outside, then jammed the keyholes for good measure.

She hadn’t gone far before the sound of chaotic footsteps and panicked shouting echoed behind her.

“Why are the doors locked from the outside?! Call a locksmith!”

“The Memorial Hall is near the bamboo grove, but we spray insect repellent and weed killer every day! Where did the snakes come from?!”

“What?! Madam and Miss Esme were bitten?!”

Luella smiled in deep satisfaction, casually popping a piece of gum into her mouth as she strolled away.

In Eclara City.

Juniper Payne finished her advanced computer science seminar and headed over to the neighboring building for her medical class.

“Aren’t you exhausted?” Hattie packed up Juniper’s bag, looking concerned. “The people in that medical class just isolate you anyway. You should just stop going.”

“I gave Professor Dawson my word,” Juniper said, standing up and stifling a yawn. “Besides, if I quit now, the medical students will just think it’s funny.”

“I’ve got free time anyway, might as well.”

Juniper slung her bag over her shoulder and gave Hattie a nod. “See you tomorrow, sweetie.”

At the Medical Department.

Senior Year Advanced Special Class.

Juniper took her usual seat in the very back row and pulled out a notebook.

“Who is she trying to fool?” The medical students in the rows ahead glanced back, whispering snidely.

“She brings that notebook every day but hasn’t written a single word!”

“I don’t know why Mr. Dawson allows it. Seeing her just pisses me off!”

“Well, she

ist

the future Mrs.

Schwartz, and she’s got all thoset

other fancy titles. Mr. Dawson is probably being forced to let her sit in!”

“So what if she’s the future Mrs. Schwartz? So what if she was the top scorer?”

“We have a test tomorrow. Let’s see how much she actually learned over the last two weeks. I bet she fails spectacularly!”

“Fails?” A boy sneered. “I bet she doesn’t even know half the medical terminology.” They spoke loudly, making sure Juniper heard every word.

Juniper casually spun her pen, deeply engrossed in deciding what she wanted for dinner.

After class.

Juniper got a text from Shanley Schwartz. She grabbed her bag and headed straight for the door.

“Juniper,” Professor Dawson called out quickly, smiling warmly. “Did you understand the material we covered today?”

Juniper nodded.

“Really?” Mr. Dawson scratched his head. He felt like the girl was bluffing.

He had been observing her for two

weeks. She always seemed to pay attention, she always brought her notebook, but she never wrote

anything down Her eyes would be

on the board, but he felt her mind was somewhere else entirely.

And the second class ended, she bolted faster than anyone. Every time he asked if she understood, she just nodded. “Really,” Juniper blinked, answering earnestly. “I got it.”

“Let me test you, then,” Mr. Dawson said, keeping his voice low. “Can you summarize the main topics we went over today?”

The other students, who were

packing up to leave, instantly froze

in their tracks They lingered clearly

waiting for her to embarrass herself.

“?” Juniper let out a soft sigh and flawlessly recited the core concepts of the entire lecture.

“Wait, wait, wait!” As she kept talking, Mr. Dawson realized something was wrong and quickly threw up his hands.
