Chapter 1354
[ 619 words ]
“What if this completely ruins my acting career and I go broke?” Jimmie tightened his grip on his phone, his voice laced with exhaustion and gravel. “You wouldn’t dump me, would you?”
“That’s it?” Luella swallowed hard, her eyes red, but her tone remained as stubborn as ever. “I’m rich. I can afford to keep a pretty boy like you around.”
“Glad to hear it.” Jimmie leaned back, speaking softly. “Stay safe, Luella. I might not be able to check in on you as much for the next few days.”
“I know.” Luella discreetly wiped a tear from her eye, putting up a tough front. “Your top priority is protecting Juniper.”
Jimmie was caught between laughing and crying. Sometimes he seriously
wondered if the main reason Luella agreed to date him was because of Juniper.
Who was she really in a relationship with?!
…
After the call ended, Luella looked up at the sky and took a deep breath.
The bomb had finally dropped.
“Is everything alright, Mr. Langley?” Burt Dalton asked, looking puzzled. “You don’t look so good.”
“I’m fine,” Luella shook her head, her expression smoothing out. “Go back and do exactly as I instructed. Got it?”
“Understood,” Burt nodded.
He would inform the Executive Chief that he was solely responsible for the Subterra Vanguard contracts and that he was point man on the Schwartz Group partnership.
By doing so, he would instantly become the second most powerful figure in the Political Council, right under Lachlan Langley.
It brought her one step closer to her ultimate goal.
…
The next day.
Juniper woke up, packed her bag, and got ready for school.
She sat at the dining table, eating breakfast while scrolling through the news to check the current online climate.
When she tapped the app, she found Twitter had completely crashed. There were no comments—the app wouldn’t even load.
A quick search revealed that someone had forcibly shut down the servers.
She didn’t even need to guess who did it.
*Tsk. Flashy billionaire.*
Juniper took a sip of her soup. It warmed her stomach, and the gesture warmed her heart.
However, the mob was still vocal on other websites and apps.
“Ms. Payne, why don’t you take the day off?” Dana, the housekeeper, set down a plate, offering a worried. suggestion. It’s a mess out there. You shouldn’t risk getting hurt.”
“Thanks, Dana, but no,” Juniper replied with a calm smile. “A clear conscience fears no knocks at the doohaven’t done anything wrong, so why should I hide?”
“I know, but still-“
“Dana!” Shanley appeared, cutting her off and stepping in to reassure her. “Listen to Juniper. She knows what she’s doing.”
His girl wasn’t one to take a beating lying down, nor did she fight battles she couldn’t win.
“Understood.” Since Mr. Schwartz had spoken, Dana naturally felt at ease.
On the drive to school, Juniper aggressively tapped away at a mobile game, her
mood visibly sour as she decimated her virtual opponents.
“I have an idea. Care to hear it?” Shanley asked softly.
“Spit it out,” Juniper replied flatly, eyes glued to the screen.
“If we can’t track down Moira Saxon, there might be another way,” Shanley said,
turning to gaze at her unhurriedly. “By analyzing your parents’—”
“By analyzing my parents’ genes to extrapolate my original genetic baseline,” Juniper interrupted, putting her phone down.
“Exactly,” Shanley nodded, a fond smile reaching his dark eyes. “You thought of it too?”
“Did you stay up all night in the study
digging through research?” Juniper reached over, lightly tracing the line
of his jaw, her eyes narrowing.
“Wow Shanley
You actually dared
to teave me alone in bed.
If she had known he was going to push himself that hard, she would have pitched
the idea to him sooner.
But truthfully, while he was in his study, she had stayed up late researching to confirm the plan was viable.
“Will it work?” Shanley took her hand and pressed a kiss to her knuckles.
