Chapter 1442
[ 665 words ]
“Harold—” Lorelei rested her hand on her forehead, murmuring in a feverish daze. “My head hurts so much. It feels like little people are inside hammering away, bang, bang, bang…”
“You have a cold.” Harold opened the medical kit, found some fever medication, and brought it to her lips. “Drink this and you’ll feel better.”
“Oh.”
Lorelei leaned in for a sniff and instantly recoiled from the smell, instinctively pushing the cup away. Her eyes were glassy, and refusal was written all over her face. “It stinks. I don’t want it.”
“If you don’t take it, you’ll become an idiot.”
Harold gripped the cup tightly, his expression darkening as he spoke in a low voice.
She already had a crippled leg; if her brain stopped working too, it would be a disaster.
Then again, maybe becoming an idiot wouldn’t be so bad.
If her brain were mush, she wouldn’t constantly be thinking about divorce and finding her second spring.
“No.”
Lorelei turned her head away, lay back down, and shut her eyes, completely resolute.
She wasn’t drinking it.
Even if the fever cooked her brain, she wasn’t touching it.
Seeing her act so stubborn, Harold furrowed his brows.
In his memory.
Ever since Lorelei married him, she had always been reasonable, poised, and elegant.
Her words and actions were the absolute picture of a proper lady.
He had never seen her throw a childish tantrum like this.
He had to admit.
Accustomed to her always calm and collected demeanor, seeing her like this was actually quite endearing.
His memory instantly transported him back to when they first met.
It was back in junior high.
She had sneaked away from her family and run off to the food street behind the school.
She bought a huge pile of excessively spicy barbecue.
Terrified of being caught, she practically shoveled it into her mouth.
Her cheeks were puffed out like a little chipmunk.
Unexpectedly.
She turned around and bumped right into him.
He could see the visible panic wash over her because she knew he was friends with her brother.
Fearing he would snitch, the girl walked up to him with the remaining skewers, carefully offering them up. “Want some?”
He looked down at her. Her face was fair and beautiful, her eyes bright and lively.
“Take it!”
Probably genuinely terrified he’d tell
on her, Lorelei practically shoved the skewers into his hands mumbling through her full The sull mouth,
You ate my
food, so your lips are sealed. You
can’t tell my brother.”
Otherwise, her stepmother and stepsister would use it as an excuse to cut her allowance.
Amused and helpless, Harold held the skewers and watched the girl keep her head down as she stealthily scurried out of the alley.
Hah.
Remembering that scene brought a faint smile to Harold’s lips.
But then he remembered what happened later, and the smile vanished.
Right.
She had also bought barbecue for Joel Garner.
A lot of it, too.
Seeing the medicine was about to get cold.
Harold had no choice but to set the cup down, pick her up, and trap her in his arms. “Open your mouth!”
“I don’t want it.”
Delirious with fever, Lorelei was impossible to deal with, constantly shoving at him. “Lorelei, can you just be good!”
Harold used a bit of force, compelling her to open her mouth, his tone strict. “If you don’t drink this nicely, don’t blame me for using a special method.”
Leaning against his chest, Lorelei
looked up at his stern, handsomet
face. Her delicate brows knit together, and her voice dripped with grievance Harold, you’re so mean!”
“Glad you noticed,” Harold swirled the cup, threatening in a low rasp. “Drink.”
Forced to open her mouth, Lorelei didn’t even have time to react before the bitter taste flooded her tongue.
“Cough, cough, cough.”
Forced to swallow it down, she choked and coughed violently.
Once she finished, Harold immediately took the cup away and gave her warm water
to rinse her mouth.
“No more. Lorelei struggled weakly,
complaining in a muffled voice, “Why
did you make me drink so much?
Don’t think I don’t know you
trying
to poison me.”
“Harold, you’re a…”
Harold paused, waiting for the insult to follow.
He wanted to hear what kind of outrageous things this elegant Ms. Bellamy could
come up with while her brain was fried by a fever.
