Chapter 1455
[ 513 words ]
“Whether I have a shot or not isn’t up to you,” Joel replied darkly, his voice low. “Harold, I’m not backing down this time.”
“The final choice belongs to Lori.”
He added, “And considering you’re about to be kicked out of the game, I have no idea where you’re getting this confidence.”
“We’ll see who gets kicked out!”
Throwing the words over his shoulder, Harold turned on his heel and walked away without hesitation.
Joel stood frozen, watching his retreating back as his own fists slowly clenched.
If Lorelei truly loved him, he would have been the one standing by her side today.
Harold Houston…
He would have absolutely zero right to even be near her.
Back at the table.
Harold returned alone, radiating an icy aura and looking exceptionally grim.
Lorelei’s heart leaped into her throat. “Are you guys okay? You didn’t fight, did you?” “Why are you so nervous?”
He looked down at her, his dark eyes searching hers. “Afraid I beat him to a pulp?”
“Yes.”
She nodded honestly, her long eyelashes fluttering in genuine concern.
Joel might be a divorce attorney, but he had taken on personal injury cases before.
And won them all.
If they had actually fought, what if Joel used it to destroy his career?
Furthermore.
Harold was currently under observation for membership in an elite international medical association. Any bad press would ruin his future.
Of course she was worried.
But to Harold, her words translated into: *Yes, I was terrified you were going to hurt my precious Joel.*
He stood there, frozen like a kicked puppy left out in the rain.
“Did you guys actually fight?” Her face paled as her voice pitched higher. “Harold, did you “
“Of course not.”
Joel strolled leisurely out of the hallway, the pleasant, unbothered smile securely back on his face. “Though if your little scout had arrived ten seconds later, it might
have come to that.”
Lorelei frowned. “Then you would have definitely lost. Harold does Taekwondo.”
He had practiced since high school and had some high-level belt. He was incredibly skilled.
To Harold’s ears, this translated as: *Harold is too violent, Joel, you should stay away from him so you don’t get hurt.*
Hmph.
Now she was blatantly showing her concern for another man right to his face.
“You certainly live up to your
profession, Mr. Garner. You have a very sharp tongue,” Harold
interrupted them his brow furrowing
deeply if you run your mouth like
that again, I just might actually take a swing.”
Joel feigned innocence. “Lori, I think your husband might have anger issues.”
Lorelei blinked. “Huh?”
Joel continued, “Lori, don’t forget what I do for a living. I specialize in divorce. If you ever need me, just say the word.”
“Don’t worry, Mr. Garner.” Harold scoffed, his lips curling into a cold sneer Even if you end up on your second divorce, I still won’t be getting one.”
Done entertaining this nonsense, Harold bent down and scooped Lorelei into his arms to leave.
Out of habit, she immediately wrapped her arms around his neck.
The corners of Harold’s mouth ticked upward, the storm in his chest instantly dissolving.
It seemed changing a person’s habits wasn’t so difficult after all.
The most pressing task now was making sure he was the only man she saw.
