Chapter 1493
[ 670 words ]
Bringing up the past, Eleanor’s voice choked with emotion. “This poor girl has had such a hard life growing up.”
If it hadn’t been for her constantly doting on and protecting Lori, who knows how the girl would have turned out.
“My health is failing. I could go at any moment,” Eleanor murmured. “My only wish is for Lori to be happy for the rest of her life.”
“Honestly, I don’t care if she’s wealthy or powerful. I just want her to have someone who will truly care for her and cherish her.”
As she spoke, Eleanor began silently wiping away her tears.
Harold felt a sharp pang in his chest, his expression turning grim.
“Your marriage wasn’t exactly conventional.” Eleanor sighed heavily, her voice gravelly. “Harold, Grandma knows you’re a good man, and I know this arrangement was incredibly unfair to you back then.”
“So, what I want to say is… if you really don’t have any feelings for Lori, it might be best if you two just got a divorce.”
Harold’s head snapped up, a deep furrow forming between his brows.
Was the entire world trying to make them divorce?
It seemed he didn’t just have to fend off Joel; he had to fend off his own family too.
“Let Lori go, and set yourself free as well.” Eleanor dabbed at her eyes again, speaking earnestly. “While I still have breath in my lungs, I want to find her someone she can truly rely on for the rest of her life.”
“Grandma.”
Harold’s demeanor shifted, his face turning dead serious. “Lori and I are not getting a divorce.”
“Hmm?”
Eleanor blinked, feigning confusion. “Don’t hide it from me. I know about your agreement to divorce after three years. All that talk about having a baby was just to humor an old lady.”
Did he think that just because she stayed home all day, she was completely clueless?
She was more up-to-date on Australis’s high-society gossip than anyone.
How else did Lori manage to drop all those scandalous bombshells at the banquet?
She was the one who had prepped her!
“I’m sorry, Grandma.” Harold stood up and bowed his head respectfully. “I was too consumed with work before and neelected Lori. I promise to spend the rest of my life making it up to her.”
“Lori doesn’t want your pity.”
“It’s not pity.” Harold looked up, meeting Eleanor’s eyes with absolute conviction. “Grandma, I love her.”
Eleanor froze for a few seconds before asking in deliberate disbelief, “Are you saying… you actually love my Lori?”
“I do.” Harold nodded. “I will do everything in my power to prove it and make sure she completely drops the idea of a divorce.”
“Well, if that’s the case, I’ll hold off on screening candidates for now.”
Eleanor rubbed her nose,
murmuring, “But if you can’t win her over I’m still going to keep looking out for her.
“That lawyer, Mr. Garner, seems like quite a catch, doesn’t he?”
Eleanor shot a pointed look at Martha standing nearby, tossing the question out intentionally.
“Oh? Yes, absolutely.” Martha nodded knowingly. “Mr. Garner definitely seems to have a soft spot for the young miss.”
“We are not getting a divorce.” Harold’s fingers curled into tight fists as he repeated himself. “Everyone else can drop the fantasy right now.”
“I know, I know.”
Eleanor offered an awkward little laugh, explaining, “Grandma was just thinking out loud. If you aren’t
divorcing, obviously would just
trying to set her up.”
“Harold, why don’t you go check on Lori? What’s taking her so long?”
“Alright.”
Harold nodded obediently, though his face was thunderous as he strode toward the kitchen.
Once he was completely out of sight.
Eleanor patted her chest, eagerly asking, “Well, Martha? How did I do? Was my acting convincing?”
“Flawless.” Martha covered her mouth to hide a smile. “You terrified the poor man. He’ll be pulling out all the stops to win her back now.”
“These two kids don’t know how to communicate. They need me to push them a little.”
Eleanor let out a long breath of relief. “It’s obvious they care about each other. It’s best to throw a little fuel on that fire.”
“I have a feeling I’ll be holding my great-grandbabies very soon.”
