Chapter 1495
[ 569 words ]
“Okay.”
Harold nodded, leaning heavily on Lorelei as they moved, though he subtly quickened his pace, terrified she might change her mind and dump him on the sofa.
Once he was settled in bed.
Lorelei frantically rushed around to find his medicine, quickly returning with cold and fever pills.
Harold swallowed them down and leaned back against the headboard, his eyes fixed entirely on Lorelei.
“Hang on, let me grab the thermometer.” Lorelei was spinning like a top, rushing back and forth across the room to tend to him.
Harold’s eyes tracked her every movement, a profound sense of satisfaction filling his chest.
Grandma was right; older folks really knew best.
Playing the sympathy card worked wonders.
Right now, in Lorelei’s eyes, he was the only thing that existed.
The timer beeped.
Lorelei checked the reading and gasped. “103.6 degrees? Have you been feeling sick this whole time?”
Harold frowned.
Maybe.
But between every elder in their lives pressuring them to divorce, who had the time to notice if they were sick or not?
“Wait right here, let me go grab a cool compress.” Lorelei dashed off again, then hurried back, kneeling on the edge of the mattress as she carefully peeled the backing off the patch.
Harold stayed quiet, watching her intently, a faint, contented smile gracing his lips.
Just then.
The phone resting on the nightstand started to ring. He glanced over.
The name ‘Joel’ flashed brightly on the screen.
Lorelei gently pressed the cool patch onto Harold’s forehead, then reached for her phone and swiped to answer. “Hello, Joel?”
A suffocating knot formed in Harold’s chest. Hearing her say his name instantly wiped out whatever rationality he had left.
He grabbed Lorelei’s wrist, jerking her roughly against his chest, and buried his face in the crook of her neck.
“Huh?”
The phone tumbled onto the pillow next to them, still connected, as Lorelei collapsed entirely into Harold’s embrace.
She tried to push herself up, but the man immediately pinned her back down.
His hot, ragged breaths fanned against her ear. “Lori, my head is killing me. Rub it for me.”
“It really hurts?”
Lorelei instantly tensed up with
worry, resting her fingers against his
女
temples and massaging them softly.
“How’s that. Any better?”
“No.”
Harold shamelessly soaked up her gentle touch, blatantly lying, “Keep rubbing for a bit.”
“Maybe we really should go to the
hospital. Lorelei was getting
incredibly anxious about his
vel
condition Your fever is so high, and your heart is beating way too fast.’
Harold’s lips twitched. With her pressed against him like this, if his hear rate was normal something else would be severely broken.
“No, this isn’t right. We have to go to the hospital.” Lorelei frowned. “Hang on, let me
ask Joel why he’s calling.”
Saying that.
She reached out for her phone, managing to utter a single “Hello—”
Suddenly, Harold surged upward, crashing his lips against hers.
In the same breath, he pinned her wrists securely against the mattress. “Mmph-“
Lorelei’s eyes widened, staring at Harold in absolute disbelief.
“Lori?”
The phone had accidentally been knocked onto speaker, and Joel’s frantic voice
echoed through the room. “Lori, are you okay?”
Harold’s dark eyes deepened, and he kissed her even more fiercely.
Lorelei’s hands naturally gripped his shoulders, her gaze clouding over as her mind completely short-circuited.
Why was he kissing her?
Was he hallucinating from the fever?!
“Lori.”
Joel’s voice was still broadcasting from the phone, growing increasingly panicked. “Where are you? What’s going on?”
*So annoying!*
Harold finally pulled back slightly from her lips, his breathing chaotic as he brushed his nose against hers.
He turned his head toward the phone and declared in a low, unmistakable tone, “She’s in my bed!”
