Chapter 1506
[ 647 words ]
Harold’s phone passcode was actually her birthday?
Lorelei’s heart plummeted. She had this surreal feeling that dreams and reality were colliding, leaving her completely disoriented.
If it were really true, and the girl Harold had been in love with for all these years was her.
Then why hadn’t he confessed his feelings once in their three years of marriage?
Lorelei leaned her head back against the wall, a million questions swirling in her mind.
Once this surgery was over, she was going to demand answers.
She owed it to her fifteen-year unrequited crush to get some closure.
She refused to keep living in this state of agonizing confusion.
Dawn finally broke.
The rest of the Bellamy family had lost patience hours ago and gone to rest at a nearby hotel.
The only ones left waiting were Lorelei, Tanner, and Martha.
Finally, after nearly ten grueling hours, the light above the operating room flicked off.
The doors swung open.
The doctors wheeled Eleanor’s bed out into the hall.
“Grandma.”
Lorelei immediately ran over, leaning down to look at the frail woman covered in tubes and an oxygen mask. Tears sprang to her eyes.
“The surgery was a complete success,” Felicia said, pulling down her surgical mask with a tired smile. “Dr. Houston is truly brilliant.”
“Thank you.”
Lorelei looked up at Felicia, her throat so tight she could barely speak, unsure of what she was feeling.
“Take her to the ICU for monitoring.” Harold stepped out of the OR right at that moment.
He was still in his blue scrubs. When he took off his mask, deep red lines were indented into his handsome face. His eyes were completely bloodshot, and he looked entirely drained of life.
“Right away, Dr. Houston.” The nurse nodded respectfully and began steering the bed toward the ICU.
Lorelei stood frozen, her eyes locked on Harold. After a few seconds of hesitation, she murmured, “Thank you.”
“You don’t need to thank me.”
Harold offered a faint smile. He reached out, his thumb gently wiping away the tear tracks at the corner of the girl’s eyes. “Why are you crying? Everything is fine now.”
Hearing that, the tears Lorelei had barely managed to stop came flooding back all over again.
“Dr. Houston, the ICU nurses are waiting for your post-op instructions,” Felicia noted softly from the side.
“I’m coming.”
Harold gave a quiet nod, though eyes never left Lorelei’s face. He
his
ordered her gently, “You havreste
sleptall night. Go home and rest!!! stay here with Grandma.”
With that, Harold finally turned around to walk away with Felicia.
But just as he reached the top of the stairwell, his vision suddenly pitched black, his knees completely giving out.
Harold instinctively grabbed for the handrail, but before he could steady himself, sheer exhaustion and low blood sugar sent him tumbling down the hard steps.
“Dr. Houston!” Felicia shrieked in horror.
“Harold!” Lorelei sprinted after him.
In an instant, the stairwell erupted into absolute chaos. Lorelei saw blood rapidly pooling from Harold’s forehead and leg.
Harold had just walked out of an operating room.
And now he was being wheeled right back into one.
Except this time, he wasn’t the one holding the scalpel.
Lorelei stood outside the doors as the morning sun filtered through the windows, casting a golden glow over her.
But she didn’t feel a trace of warmth. In fact, she was freezing.
“Lorelei.”
Just as she was drowning in panic, Felicia walked over and handed her a cup of
warm water. “Drink this. Your lips are completely cracked.”
“Thank you.”
Lorelei took the cup, thanking her quietly.
“It’s nothing.” Felicia gave a small smile. “Dr. Houston will be just fine. Come sit down down with me. There’s actually something I wanted to talk you about.”
Talk about what?
Lorelei had no idea, but she took a seat next to her.
“I heard you and Dr. Houston are in the middle of a divorce. Could I ask why?”
Felicia had always been a straightforward person, and she asked bluntly.
Lorelei choked on her words, unable to answer.
Last night, Harold had sworn he never had feelings for Felicia, and that she wasn’t
his first love.
