Chapter 1542
[ 586 words ]
Kian was rendered speechless by Melvin’s sarcasm, looking somewhat embarrassed.
For some reason, he felt that Mr. Steele was hostile toward him. The last time he borrowed a book, the man had just left him standing there.
“Mr. Steele?” Janet stood up as well, looking at him in surprise. “What are you doing here?”
“Hm?”
Melvin instantly changed his expression, offering a gentle smile and speaking softly, “I came for a training class to learn some law. I got hungry, so I figured I’d check out what’s good at the cafeteria.”
“It’s a big table. You don’t mind if I join you, do you?”
As he spoke.
Melvin simply sat himself down.
Janet blinked. Did you even need to ask if you were just going to sit anyway?!
“Of course.”
Kian immediately got busy, pouring water for Melvin. “What would you like to eat, Mr. Steele? I’ll go grab it.”
He had been worrying about not having a chance to connect with someone from the Schwartz family.
And now.
The opportunity was right here.
“A necklace?” Melvin ignored him, his eyes landing on the jewelry box.
Even though he didn’t know much about jewelry, he could tell this necklace was incredibly cheap material.
Judging by the craftsmanship, it was worth maybe 40 bucks tops.
Hah.
Trying to court a girl with a forty-dollar piece of junk? Did he think his Janet was some kind of garbage?
“Yes.” Kian nodded slightly, smiling. “It’s Janet’s birthday next week. This is my birthday gift to her.”
“It’s your birthday next week?”
Melvin whipped his head toward Janet, his expression darkening further.
Oh.
He didn’t even know when her birthday was.
“Perfect. My cat at home has been needing a new collar, and this looks just about right.”
Melvin picked up the necklace, examining it in his hand. “How much was it? I’ll pay you for it.”
“Uh.”
The necklace was only 25 bucks. Kian was too embarrassed to say the price, scratching his head awkwardly. “No need, no need. Since you like it, Mr. Steele, you can just have it. I’ll just buy Janet another one.”
“I appreciate the thought.”
Janet hurriedly waved her hands, replying politely. “I never celebrate my birthday. There’s no need for gifts.”
“Come on, show me what’s good in Eclara University’s cafeteria.”
Melvin pocketed the necklace and tilted his chin at Janet.
“Okay.”
Janet stood up immediately, leading Melvin to the counter. “Mr. Steele, it’s my treat.”
Thank goodness he came to her rescue, or refuse.
he wouldn’t have known ow to
Melvin raised an eyebrow slightly. “Then I’ll have to eat a lot.”
Left isolated, Kian sat in place, watching their retreating figures with mixed feelings.
Melvin was holding a tray in one

other hand thought
Janet to keep her from bumped by the crowd.
Kian’s gaze darkened.
Mr. Steele really cared deeply for Janet, even though they weren’t blood-related.
This made his plan to use Janet as a stepping stone to higher social circles even more intense.
Exactly.
He had to hurry up and win Janet over, ideally making her hopelessly devoted to him.
Halfway through the meal.
Janet earnestly explained the topics covered in the previous debate.
“That’s roughly it.” Janet looked at Kian and asked, “Do you have any more questions?”
“?”
Kian had originally intended to use this chance to chat her up.
But with Melvin sitting right there, staring at him with eyes like daggers, he didn’t stand a chance.
He had zero room to maneuver.
He had skipped his noon nap to listen to Janet talk about dry

concepts for two hours, and yet
could barely keep his eyes open.
“Understood.”
Kian twitched his lips, putting on a flawless smile. “Thanks, Janet.”
Janet replied, “You’re welcome.”
“If you don’t have any more questions, then scram.” Melvin leaned back, speaking lazily
