Chapter 1547

“No.” Janet stepped forward, handing the bag to Melvin. “Here are your clothes back, Mr. Steele.”
“Yeah.”
Melvin took it and tossed it into the car, his gaze remaining intensely fixed on Janet.
He wanted to ask, was the dating rumor true?
Did she really like that smooth-talking jerk?
But in what capacity could he even ask?
And if this girl really did like him, was he supposed to just break them up?
“I’ve got a contract for the company that needs reviewing,” Melvin said, opening the car door for her. “Care to take a look for me?”
“Sure.”
Janet happened to have no classes that afternoon, so she went with him to the office.
Melvin ran a motor racing company.
The moment she walked through the gates, she saw dozens of heavily modified sports cars parked across the lot.
All sorts of colors and designs, a dazzling array of machines.
Janet had never paid much attention to this world, but she was completely blown away by the sight.
“Like it?”
Sensing her genuine awe, Melvin lowered his voice. “After we look over the contract, I’ll take you for a spin.”
“Really?” Janet’s eyes lit up, brimming with anticipation.
“Of course.”
A lazy smile tugged at the corner of Melvin’s lips. “If you want it, I’d pull the stars from the sky for you.”
Janet snapped her gaze to Melvin, her smile freezing as the words caught in her throat.
“Let’s head inside.”
Melvin ran a hand through his hair and led Janet into the building.
Even though she was only a freshman, she studied relentlessly in her free time, poring over law books and case studies.
She actually knew her way around a contract.
Within minutes, she pinpointed the exact issues in the document.
After they wrapped up.
Melvin took Janet out to the track and grabbed a white helmet from a mechanic, sliding it over her head.
The helmet was a bit too big, swallowing up most of her face.
“Pfft-“
Looking at Janet, who now resembled a cute little bobblehead, Melvin couldn’t hold back a laugh.
“What’s so funny, Mr. Steele?” Janet’s cheeks flushed, her big eyes blinking rapidly, looking ridiculously adorable.
“Nothing.”
Maintaining his smile, Melvin pulled open the car door and motioned for Janet to get into the passenger seat.
He leaned over to buckle her seatbelt for her.
The angle forced them unavoidably close; if it weren’t for the helmet in the way, their foreheads would have touched.
As Melvin leaned in, the crisp scent of pine mixed with a faint hint of tobacco drifted into her senses.
Janet’s breath hitched, her eyes unconsciously lingering on the man’s face.
Sharp jawline, striking features—he was objectively, ruggedly handsome.
Staring at that face, Janet’s mind went completely blank for a second.
“Buckled in?” Melvin asked her.
“Yeah.”
Janet snapped back to reality. She looked calm on the outside, but her, heart was hammering uncontrollably against her ribs.
What on earth was she thinking?
This was Juniper’s brother!
“Ready, 3-2-1…” After the
Bet
countdown, Melvin slammed on the gas,

the starting line like a bullet
“Ah-“
Janet gripped the handle for dear life, the wind whipping against her face, her ears ringing.
The car braked hard, then accelerated, drifted around a sharp corner, then spun out in donuts…
Even though Janet was terrified, she had never experienced anything like this before. It was fresh and thrilling.
She loved it.
Three minutes later.
The car finally came to a halt. Janet
and
unbuckled her seatbelter soul”
stumbled out, feeling like her soul
had left her body.
The second her feet hit the pavement, her legs turned to jelly and she started to collapse.
“Careful.”
Melvin closed the distance in a single stride, catching her in his arms. He flashed a wicked, teasing grin.
“It was just a ride. No need to fall to your knees in adoration, sweetheart.”
