Chapter 205
“Old Jiang… you should accept reality. Quansheng is beyond saving,” someone cautiously advised.
But Jiang Guoli glared at them fiercely. “Stop talking nonsense! My son isn’t dead! He just need to see the doctor!”
“Alright, there’s nothing more to see,” Su Xiaoxiao whispered to Aunt Guo and Jiang Yexun.
Aunt Guo quickly agreed, “Yes, yes, let’s go. Watching this will give us nightmares tonight.”
She had thought it was just a fierce fight between a couple, never expecting it to result in murder, especially at Yu Siping’s hands. The usually gentle Jiang couple had proven themselves capable of extreme actions.
Jiang Yexun noticed his fiancée’s unusually calm demeanor. She seemed to have anticipated the outcome and didn’t react to Jiang Quansheng’s condition. This contrast between her soft appearance and strong will intrigued him.
Regardless, Jiang Yexun accepted Su Xiaoxiao’s demeanor without question; he liked every aspect of her.
The three returned home while chaos continued next door. Su Xiaoxiao paused briefly in the courtyard, then went to the kitchen to make herself a cup of malted milk to drown out the lingering smell of blood.
“Do you want some, Aunt Guo, Yexun?” she asked.
Aunt Guo shook her head vigorously. “No, thank you. I’ll go calm down and try to sleep.”
The scene had been too shocking for her; she was certain she’d have nightmares and wouldn’t dare to cook meat for days.
Seeing Su Xiaoxiao drinking her malted milk with a detached expression, Jiang Yexun assumed she was in shock.
“Alright, stop thinking about it. You might have nightmares,” he said, ruffling her hair.
“I won’t. This won’t give me nightmares,” Su Xiaoxiao replied, stepping back.
In her past life, she had seen her own charred body, her parents’ lifeless, pallid forms in the morgue, and Jiang Yexun’s mangled, bloodied body with glass shards embedded in it. Strangers’ deaths might evoke fear and pity, but those who had wronged her and Jiang Yexun only brought relief.
“It’s okay. One by one, none of them will escape,” she thought.
“Drink up and let’s go to sleep,” Jiang Yexun suggested, thinking she was still in shock.
“No, Yexun, I want to sleep alone tonight,” Su Xiaoxiao insisted. She didn’t want the day’s tragic events to interfere with their intimacy, especially when Jiang Yexun might not be in the mood.
Worried about her nightmares, Jiang Yexun frowned, “Won’t you be more scared alone if you have nightmares?”
“I won’t have nightmares,” Su Xiaoxiao assured him firmly.
Seeing her resolve, Jiang Yexun nodded. After she finished her malted milk, he escorted her back to her room and only left once she was settled in bed. He washed the mug in the kitchen before returning to his own room.
Despite turning off their lights, the Jiang household’s commotion continued through the night. Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun finally fell into a deep sleep as dawn broke and the noise subsided.
Barely two hours later, someone pounded on their door.
“Open up! Guo Hongxiang, Jiang Yexun, open the door!” Jiang Guoli’s angry voice called out.
Jiang Yexun immediately woke up, threw on a military coat, and went to the door. As he opened it, Jiang Guoli tried to force his way in but was blocked.
“Say what you need to outside,” Jiang Yexun said coldly, his voice full of undisguised annoyance.
Jiang Guoli raised his hand to slap him, but Jiang Yexun caught his wrist firmly. “Had enough?”
“As your father, I can’t discipline you?” Jiang Guoli struggled but couldn’t break free.
“You may be Yexun’s father, but that doesn’t give you the right to hit him,” Aunt Guo shouted, stepping out in her military coat.
Jiang Guoli’s eyes bulged with rage, bloodshot and glaring. “It’s because he’s not loyal to his family! If he’d given his good job to his brother, Quansheng wouldn’t be dead.”
“Get lost! If you think his death is our fault, report it to the police,” Aunt Guo snapped, furious at the absurd accusation. She was tempted to emulate Yu Siping and deal with this unreasonable man harshly.
“Don’t think I won’t divorce you!” Jiang Guoli threatened through gritted teeth.
Unfazed, Jiang Yexun replied, “Your precious son is gone, and you only have one left. If you want to cause trouble, go ahead and try.”
