Chapter 303
“You have guns, why do we still need to risk ourselves?”
“Yeah, isn’t Educated Youth Su’s brother a battalion commander? He’s a PLA comrade and so capable; it’s his duty to protect us.”
Their voices were filled with a sense of righteous indignation.
Su Hongchen sneered in frustration. “Do you think a few people with four makeshift guns can fend off a pack of wolves? Our rifles ensure our safety at the very least. What about you?”
In such situations, if the able-bodied young men wouldn’t step up, he had to ensure his own safety first in order to save more people. Unfortunately, these villagers lacked even basic logic.
“You shouldn’t…”
Someone tried to argue but was cut off by Jiang Yexun.
“There’s no should or shouldn’t. If you won’t save yourselves, then go die.”
A few men who had been cowed by Su Hongchen and Jiang Yexun’s words could barely lift their heads. They were about to step forward when their family members pulled them back.
“Are you trying to get yourselves killed?” their families urged anxiously.
“That’s exactly why we need to step up—to ensure everyone survives. If we rely solely on them, if they get injured, we all die.” The young man pushed away his mother’s hand and hurriedly explained.
This reasoning made everyone pause. Those who had been stopping them now withdrew their hands, and people quickly stepped forward.
Others handed over their axes, hoes, and sickles.
As they argued, the pack of wolves continued to close in. The closer they got, the more the flashlight beams revealed their crimson blood. Clearly, they had injured people already.
Those hiding behind started to scan the group, trying to figure out who was missing. Before they could fully assess the situation, the wolves emitted a fierce growl.
Though wild animals, wolves had intelligence. The largest male wolves fixed their bloodshot, glowing green eyes on Jiang Yexun, Su Hongchen, and the others with guns.
The wolf king arched its back and issued a deep, menacing growl towards Jiang Yexun and Su Hongchen. The other wolves began to encircle the villagers, tightening their grip.
Su Hongchen’s breaths grew longer and more rhythmic. Jiang Yexun and his brothers, experienced in hunting, knew exactly what this signified.
On Su Hongchen’s third exhalation, they all pulled their triggers simultaneously.
“Roar!”
The wolves pounced on the gathered villagers with a savage leap, engaging in a fierce battle. Jiang Yexun and his team, despite the wolves’ evasive maneuvers, managed to inflict fatal damage with their well-aimed shots.
They quickly reloaded and fired again. Some wolves were killed outright, while others were merely injured. There was no time for further consideration; they had to reload and keep firing as quickly as possible.
Suddenly, two screams pierced the air. Su Hongchen turned to see two men with wolves clamped onto their arms. The wolves were viciously tearing at their limbs, trying to pull them off entirely.
Su Hongchen quickly reloaded and shot one of the wolves. As he tried to help the second man, another wolf lunged at him.
The wind from the wolf’s leap forced Su Hongchen to dodge with difficulty. But the agile wolf changed its position mid-air and continued its attack.
Su Hongchen tried to counterattack but heard a gunshot. The wolf fell heavily to the ground just inches away from him.
Su Hongchen barely had time to thank Jiang Yexun before turning to help the man with the wolf still attacking him. The delay meant the man was gravely injured.
Just as the wolf was about to bite into the man’s neck, Su Hongchen shot it through the head, and the wolf fell onto the injured man.
Turning to Jiang Yexun, Su Hongchen saw that Jiang Yexun’s rifle was now in the wolf king’s jaws.
Anxious, Su Hongchen hurried to reload, but Jiang Yexun had already freed one hand and pulled out a knife from behind his waist. Before the wolf king could react, Jiang Yexun drove the long blade into its neck.
With a fierce expression, Jiang Yexun used all his strength to drive the wolf king into the ground, then slashed downward. The wolf king barely had a chance to struggle before its head was nearly severed, blood splattering across Jiang Yexun’s face, highlighting his deadly gaze.
Su Hongchen hesitated with his finger on the trigger, suddenly realizing he had underestimated Jiang Yexun. He had thought Jiang Yexun was merely clever and physically fit from years of hunting, but this ruthless gaze revealed a primal ferocity hidden beneath a veneer of civility.
This made Su Hongchen wonder if his delicate sister would end up being mistreated by Jiang Yexun in the future.
But there was no time for such thoughts. He turned and shot the closest wolf to him.
Seeing their king fall so easily, the remaining wolves retreated quickly. They paced anxiously, scraping at the ground and growling at the villagers.
There were only six or seven wolves left. Those who frequently hunted knew that such beasts had a strong desire for revenge and would not be easily deterred.
Several gunshots rang out, and the remaining wolves that tried to flee back into the mountains all fell on the way.
Jiang Yexun wiped the blood from his face and looked at Su Hongchen with concern. He knew how much his little fiancée cared about her brother, and if Su Hongchen were hurt, Xiaoxiao would surely be heartbroken for a long time.
But Su Hongchen was still absorbed in Jiang Yexun’s menacing gaze, and now, seeing Jiang Yexun’s concerned expression, he felt a strange discomfort.
