Chapter 379
Upon hearing Su Hongchen’s words, Ding Xuechun’s eyes lit up.
“Really? That would be such a hassle for you, Brother Su!” She quickly thanked him, unable to suppress the smile on her face.
“It’s nothing, just a word,” Su Hongchen casually waved his hand.
“Alright, brother, we’ll take our leave. You should get some more sleep. Let’s have lunch at the small building and invite Mom and Dad too,” Su Xiaoxiao said as she prepared to lead the others out.
But Su Hongchen stopped her, “No rush. Wait for me to change my clothes; we’ll go out together. I need to stop by the police station anyway, and I’ll ask about the situation before heading to the small building.”
“You can go to the police station after lunch. You always forget to eat when you work! What if something more important comes up? Let Yexun handle it alone,” she quickly refused.
Ji Yujing softly added, “My two brothers will be there as well.”
“Well, that means three men are going to fight three rounds. It’s still better to have my brother there to keep things in check,” Su Xiaoxiao nodded but continued to press Su Hongchen.
Everyone knew that Su Hongchen couldn’t fight directly; at most, he could intervene during a brawl.
But for Su Hongchen, his ability to intervene in a way that rendered the opponent defenseless while maintaining the upper hand in public opinion was his true strength.
Su Hongchen narrowed his eyes, glancing at Jiang Yexun, and noticed he didn’t object. He found it odd that He Xingzhi, who usually stayed close by, was absent.
Soon, Su Hongchen began to speculate, feeling somewhat emotional.
The few children rescued alongside He Xingzhi’s sister were particularly difficult to communicate with.
In their minds, only their foster parents’ words were right, and only their foster parents truly cared for them. Despite many attempts to guide them, it was utterly fruitless.
Those who were taken in and raised until their teens before being sent off or married were even more severely brainwashed.
Even when they clearly understood what was happening, they firmly believed they had done nothing wrong and felt persecuted.
They were obstinate and would rather die than betray their family.
“Alright, I’ll take another nap and head over around noon,” Su Hongchen reluctantly agreed to Su Xiaoxiao’s suggestion and returned to his room.
Only then did Su Xiaoxiao lead Ji Yujing and the others to the small building.
After some time of renovations and with furniture gradually arriving, the small building now looked particularly comfortable.
During lunch, Ji Yujing and Ding Xuechun learned that Jiang Yexun had purchased the small building, registering it under Su Xiaoxiao’s name as her bride price.
Previously, they had thought Jiang Yexun, no matter how good he was, was just a rural bumpkin who could never match up to the pampered daughter of a factory owner like Su Xiaoxiao.
But now, seeing how he could make such a significant amount of money hunting in Northeast China, they felt nothing but envy for Su Xiaoxiao.
Especially Ding Xuechun, who began to regret only looking at whether her partner was from the city without investigating their family situation deeply.
Was their character good? Were their relatives easy to get along with? How much money did they have? Could they support a big family in the future?
If she had known she would end up married to a man who would hit his wife, she would have rather found a reliable villager.
After happily finishing their meal, Jiang Yexun and Su Xiaoxiao led the group directly to Gui Zhenzhen’s family home.
The family had just finished eating and was napping with the door closed when there was a loud banging at the door.
Those who were asleep jumped in fright, instinctively thinking that someone in the family had gotten into trouble again.
But upon looking around and seeing that everyone was still there, they secretly sighed in relief, only to be enraged as they pulled open the door.
“What the hell! Is this ever going to stop? It’s the middle of the day, and you’re making a racket!”
Gui Zhenzhen’s older brother didn’t even see who it was and started shouting.
Before he could finish, a fist landed directly on his face.
He let out a pained yelp and stumbled backward.
Before he could even comprehend what was happening, fists rained down on him like raindrops, one after another.
The pain forced him to cry out repeatedly.
The Gui family heard the commotion and rushed out, but upon seeing the situation, they immediately screamed and rushed in to help.
“Are you all insane? Who barges in and starts hitting people without saying a word!”
Yet this group of people was as weak as a wet paper towel; not only were they unable to gain the upper hand, they couldn’t even take on Jiang Yexun.
The nearby neighbors had heard the commotion long ago, but they all knew that Gui Zhenzhen had taken money from the spies and worked for them, so no one dared to join in on the fun at the Gui family’s expense.
With eight or nine people from the Gui family, including children, they were all beaten to the ground, crying pathetically.
“Is there no justice left? Is there no law?” Gui mother cried, pounding the ground.
Su Xiaoxiao merely crossed her arms and watched her like a circus performer.
“Do you even have the nerve to talk about justice and law? Gui Zhenzhen colluded with the spies to harm me, yet I didn’t come to your house to settle scores. But you went to Ding Xuechun’s house to cause trouble. If you hadn’t gained anything from their family, you would have probably come to cause trouble at my and Ji Yujing’s home.”
Hearing this, the Gui family trembled but then insisted, “This is your fault! If you hadn’t been targeted by the spies, my daughter wouldn’t have been tempted by them! Our family is so poor; who wouldn’t be tempted by money and job offers? If she hadn’t been your classmate, how could she have become someone else’s pawn and been lured? We’re just ordinary citizens, with limited horizons; is succumbing to temptation such a grave sin?”
