Chapter 39
As time passed and it grew later, Jiang Yexun eventually helped the young girl to her feet. “Alright, be good. You go back and rest. I’ll come find you tomorrow morning.”
“You don’t have to hurry to find me. Get some rest.” Su Xiaoxiao quickly refused.
However, Jiang Yexun didn’t respond with words. Instead, he gently pushed her, urging her without saying anything. Su Xiaoxiao had no choice but to enter the house, taking one step at a time and frequently looking back.
When Jiang Yexun reached the foot of the mountain, his friends were already waiting there. “Brother Jiang, why did you come so late? Aren’t we going deep into the mountains tonight?” Zhang Tiewa said while handing over a weapon-like object to him. He also took the things Jiang Yexun was holding.
“We’re not going deep into the mountains tonight. We’ll just hunt some rabbits and wild chickens.” Jiang Yexun checked the items to make sure everything was in order before continuing.
Several young men were somewhat shocked. “Boss, these things won’t fetch a good price. If we hunt too many, it’s a waste.”
“We’re hunting for your sister-in-law,” Jiang Yexun said casually, looking at them.
Those men had already heard from Zhang Tiewa about their boss and the Educated Youth Su. Now, seeing their boss was specifically hunting these small creatures for her, they couldn’t help but tease him, laughing and joking.
“Sister-in-law likes to eat these, so we’ll hunt them tonight.”
“Your sister-in-law is from the south and can’t stand the cold in winter. We’ll make her a rabbit fur hat and scarf. Be sharp-eyed later; your sister-in-law looks good in white.”
“Doctor Cui also said that your sister-in-law works hard in the fields and needs to replenish her energy. My mom said that hunting wild chickens and making soup is good for her.”
Jiang Yexun spoke casually, and the several young men were left dumbfounded.
Their boss, who usually never said much, had just said “your sister-in-law” four times in a row. He had never been this chatty before, which made them suspect that their boss was intentionally showing off his relationship with the little Educated Youth Su.
However, despite their complaints, they still followed him.
“Brother Jiang, when my grandma was sick, Doctor Cui said that ginseng is the best for replenishing vitality. Should we ask Gao if he has any?”
“Yeah, and do you remember last year, a guy who claimed to have brought goods from the seaport said there’s nothing better for women’s health than donkey-hide gelatin. But the price is too high. He wanted a hundred bucks for two finger-sized pieces.”
Jiang Yexun thought for a moment but didn’t say anything else. The group ventured deeper into the forest.
Not long after, faint sounds that were almost imperceptible came from inside the forest.
Su Xiaoxiao had a particularly sound sleep, and she was awakened by the broadcast in the educated youth dormitory the next day. The other educated youths had already woken up, so she quickly tidied herself and joined everyone as they left.
Jiang Yexun had already informed her that from now on, her daily task was to cut hogweed. For Su Xiaoxiao, this amount of work felt like going on an outing. She intended to make the most of her three remaining years to study. In her previous life, she had only attended an ordinary university, but in this life, she aimed to work hard and gain admission to the best university in China.
Furthermore, she had a formidable enemy lurking in the shadows, so she needed to seize every opportunity to climb to a height that would be visible to everyone. This way, when that person decided to take action, they might think twice. However, she wasn’t foolish enough to believe that she could solve such a big problem on her own. Her priority was to save her brother, and then she could plan her next steps more carefully.
