Chapter 523
The Disciplinary Office people were just talking big, never actually planning to go to bat for Peng Huijing. If the Zhang family wanted to settle accounts later, they could at least say they had tried to intercede.
Chief Deputy Wang knew exactly what these people were up to and despised them for it. So, he didn’t waste any more time on them and quickly ordered his subordinates from the police to head to the Zhang residence.
Aunt Lin opened the door, and when she heard the police’s intentions, she nearly fainted from fear.
“You… you wait a moment. I’ll go inform the master of the house,” she stammered, trembling.
She tried to close the door behind her, but the leading police officer slammed his hand on it, stopping her.
“Are you trying to warn them?” he demanded coldly.
Their mission was to take someone away, and if this Spy got wind of the danger, they could slip away in no time.
“I’m not!” Aunt Lin protested, her voice turning sharp with fear.
Realizing she couldn’t play games any longer, she quickly stepped aside.
“Comrade Peng is in the room on the second floor, the one in the middle. You’ll need to knock; she’s probably napping at this time,” Aunt Lin whispered, still visibly nervous.
The police didn’t say anything, simply quickening their pace. To avoid accusations of misconduct, they knocked on the door first. Originally, they planned to knock three times, and if there was no response, they would immediately break the door down. But as soon as they knocked, an impatient female voice came from inside.
“Aunt Lin, what is it? Didn’t I tell you not to disturb my nap?” Peng Huijing’s voice was sharp with annoyance.
The officers exchanged glances, but none of them spoke. Instead, they knocked again, this time more forcefully.
Inside, Peng Huijing was already in a bad mood, and being disturbed only made her more irritable. She got up and yanked the bedroom door open, ready to snap at whoever was bothering her, but as soon as she saw the police standing outside, her words caught in her throat.
Her heart raced violently, and a cold chill ran through her body. Her hands and feet went numb with fear. But on the surface, she tried to mask her panic, putting on a disgruntled expression.
“Who are you? What are you doing in my house?” she demanded, her voice tinged with irritation.
“We are from the Public Security Bureau, and we need you to cooperate with an investigation,” the lead officer said indifferently.
“I don’t have anything to talk to you about,” Peng Huijing frowned, her tone full of resistance.
But inside, her mind was already racing, trying to make sense of the situation. What had happened? Had those lowlifes who’d been extorting her recently been caught, and now they were turning her and her husband, Hanyu, over to the authorities? Or had Hanyu done something outside and gotten arrested?
With both of her elderly in-laws at home, discussing anything here would be impossible. The thought of being dragged off by the police made Peng Huijing seethe. She could already imagine the rumors that would spread in the compound.
She clenched her teeth in frustration.
“Fine, you’re just doing your job. I’ll cooperate and go with you,” Peng Huijing said, trying to sound calm. She turned to go back into her room to change clothes, hoping to leave quietly.
But as soon as she reached the bottom of the stairs, she saw her two elderly in-laws standing in the living room, their faces frozen with cold disapproval.
“General Zhang,” the officers immediately greeted, standing up straight.
Grandpa Zhang waved his hand dismissively, his sharp gaze scanning the officers before he asked, “I’ve already retired, there’s no need for such formalities. What is this about?”
The officers exchanged glances, clearly uncomfortable. Finally, the lead officer spoke up, “General Zhang, we can’t disclose the details at the moment, but we are from the East City Public Security Bureau. This operation comes directly from Chief Deputy Wang, and we’re here to ask Comrade Peng to cooperate with an investigation at the bureau.”
Cooperate with an investigation?
Grandpa Zhang’s face darkened even further.
It seemed his daughter-in-law had done something that required this kind of attention.
His expression soured even more. “In that case, I’ll go with you. I need to know what’s going on, and I can stay informed.”
He wasn’t going to let his daughter-in-law use the Zhang family’s name to shield herself this time. If she was involved in something criminal, it couldn’t be allowed to affect the Zhang family. Otherwise, they might not even know how they would come to ruin.
