Chapter 566
However, Jiang Yexun was very good at hiding his emotions.
Even Su Hongchen, who had undergone professional training, couldn’t detect any guilt or discomfort from him.
It was Su Xiaoxiao, on the other hand, who felt a little awkward. Her voice was small as she said, “Brother, don’t blame Yexun, this has nothing to do with him, I… I did it behind his back…”
She couldn’t bring herself to continue, and her voice grew softer, almost to the point of whispering, as she lowered her head, her face flushing deep red. Even her ears seemed to be about to bleed from the intensity of her embarrassment.
Jiang Yexun had already confirmed that the baby was his, so Su Hongchen naturally didn’t need to entertain any other thoughts on the matter.
After a careful consideration, an idea quickly formed in his mind.
Although it was far-fetched, it seemed to be the most likely explanation.
Su Hongchen awkwardly cleared his throat.
Since his sister wouldn’t admit it outright, he could only blame Jiang Yexun.
“What have you been doing all this time? You know my sister’s crafty, and yet you don’t keep an eye on her,” Su Hongchen scolded as he glared at Jiang Yexun.
Jiang Yexun, ever the patient one, quickly apologized. “You’re right, Brother. It’s all my fault. I should have kept a better watch.”
“Look at you now! Letting my sister get pregnant—what about her health? What if things get ugly during the divorce talks? Can she handle even a push from someone?” Su Hongchen’s worry grew, his frown deepening into a small mountain.
Jiang Yexun’s face turned pale as he heard this.
“Brother, don’t worry. I’ll stay by Xiaoxiao’s side. No one will lay a finger on her. If things go south, I’ll send her to my sister in the city, then deal with it myself,” he promised seriously.
Su Xiaoxiao, listening to their conversation, couldn’t help but feel a little amused. They were treating her like a fragile porcelain doll.
“You don’t need to be so overprotective. Honestly, I think my health is pretty good. If a fight breaks out, I may not go hand-to-hand with anyone, but at least it’ll be hard for them to lay a finger on me,” Su Xiaoxiao quickly defended herself.
She had been bullied by the Jiang family in her past life, and this time, she was determined to see them get their just deserts.
“Listen to Yexun’s plan. Don’t be reckless,” Su Hongchen warned, his brows furrowed in disapproval.
Su Xiaoxiao immediately pouted and adopted the posture of a child throwing a tantrum.
“Brother, you don’t care about me anymore. I’ve already promised not to do anything reckless, but you still keep picking on me.”
“You’re going to be a mother soon, and you’re still acting spoiled?” Su Hongchen was at a loss for how to deal with his delicate sister. It was a mix of concern and frustration.
But Su Xiaoxiao remained stubborn, her face set as she looked at him defiantly.
“Just because I’m going to be a mother, does that mean I’m not your little sister anymore? Are you not going to care about me?”
“Enough nonsense! You’ll always be my sister, and I’ll always care about you,” Su Hongchen sighed helplessly. He had no way of handling his sister.
“Alright, you’re pregnant now, so what more can I say? The most important thing is that you eat well, sleep well, dress well, and stay away from dangerous people and situations. If you can’t manage that, it won’t be me reminding you; you can wait for mom and dad to lecture you,” he added, exasperated but loving.
“I know, I know! I’ll take good care of myself and the baby!” Su Xiaoxiao raised her hand in promise.
Su Hongchen looked at her, unsure of what else to say.
After a long pause, he finally sighed in confusion. “I really don’t understand. What difference does it make if you wait a few more years to have a child?”
“Because I like children! I want to have my own!” Su Xiaoxiao blinked her big eyes, looking hopeful.
She couldn’t exactly explain that the One Child Policy would be implemented nationwide once she graduated and took the college entrance exam. Although she and Jiang Yexun would be involved in business and could likely avoid the fines, her parents and brother were still in the system.
Even though, according to the rules, they wouldn’t be directly fined, it would still cause a lot of unnecessary talk. For instance, her mother, who was the Women’s Director, would face judgment from others if she went to advise on the policy, only to have someone retort, “Your daughter’s already had a few children, who are you to tell me how many I can have?”
That would make her mother’s job a lot more difficult.
If she wanted a few more kids, it would be better if one had the Su surname and the other the Guo surname. That way, she would need to have two children.
“Alright, what’s done is done. I won’t keep nagging you. You two rest well. Tomorrow, we’ll go to the hospital for the checkup, and I’ll go with you,” Su Hongchen added, then left.
The next day, for the checkup, Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun were especially obedient.
Jiang Yexun held his little wife tightly in his arms, almost as if he feared someone might steal her away.
They woke up early, and by 7:00 a.m., Su Xiaoxiao was already awake.
Jiang Yexun helped her layer up with clothes before supporting her to the bathroom to wash up.
Once everything was done, Jiang Yexun squatted by the bed and gently coaxed, “Wait here for a bit. I’ll go buy breakfast and be back soon.”
Seeing how much he doted on her, treating her like a fragile child, Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but twitch the corner of her mouth.
“Go ahead, hurry up. I keep telling you, I’m not a porcelain doll. You don’t have to be so overly cautious.”
She nudged Jiang Yexun to hurry out of the room.
But just as she opened the door, someone was leaning against it, startling her out of her skin.
