“You’re such a jerk.”
Emily tossed the words over her shoulder as she stormed off.
“Ow.”
Kenneth doubled over, clutching his side, and watched her disappear. He was totally lost on what had just happened.
Inside the room, Anthony closed the door behind him and turned to see Charlotte propped up against the headboard. Her legs were crossed, a book in her hands. Her hair spilled across the soft pink pillows, glossy and dark, catching the warm light from the lamp. It made her features even more striking, her beauty impossible to ignore.
But she wasn’t looking at him. Her expression was icy, her eyes downcast, a thin chill over her pale cheeks. She was mad. No doubt about it.
Anthony’s lips twitched, almost a smile. He shrugged off his suit jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and headed to the living room. There was a whole spread of snacks on the table, all of them Charlotte’s favorites. His grandma had actually called ahead to ask what she liked. He hadn’t expected her to go all out like this.
He picked out a few boxes of pastries and headed back to the bedroom.
He set the cakes down on the nightstand and sat on the edge of the bed, leaning closer. “What are you reading?”
“Book.”
She didn’t even look up. The one-word answer was colder than the air conditioning. She turned away from him completely, making it clear she wasn’t in the mood. Yeah, she was definitely upset.
“Lottie Anthony let out a long breath, trying to keep his voice gentle. “I swear, I haven’t done anything with anyone. I’ve only ever been with you.”
“Oh, really?” Charlotte shot him a glare, jealousy written all over her face. “If you haven’t led anyone on, why does she call you Anth?”
“She’s just being ridiculous, calling me that on purpose.”
Anthony raised his eyebrows and gave a low laugh. He slid his arms around her from behind and let his chin rest on her shoulder. His voice dropped. “Before you showed up, there was never anyone else No random girls, no so-called fiancée. Nothing.”
Before she could say anything, he squeezed her gently and kept going. “I promise, this kind of thing won’t happen again. I won’t let anything bother you.”
Charlotte looked down, her eyes finally meeting his.
“You’re the only one I want to take care of,” Anthony said softly. He touched her
nose with his fingertip, his tone serious. “No more being mad, okay?”
“Fine.”

possessiveness impossible to hide. “Anthony, you’d better stick to you just said. Don’t forget you’ taken.”
Taken?
Anthony couldn’t help but smile at that. He met her eyes and leaned in closer. “I won’t forget, fiancée.”
Fiancée?
Charlotte’s eyebrows twitched. She let go of his tie and mumbled, “Go to sleep.”
That was all it took to calm her down?
“Alright, you sleep.” Anthony took her hand and pulled the blanket over her. He breathed in her scent, his voice a little rough. “I’ll stay right here.”
Charlotte shot him a look, shifting awkwardly, but the frustration in her chest had already melted away she relaxed into his arms, a smile finally
ing at her lips.
