The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 578

Chapter 578 Dragon King In The Spider King’s Web

Maelor Vantheos was mid-sentence when the door opened without a knock.

The mid-sentence had been addressed to a journal he was annotating with observations about Gavriel Sterling’s magical signature, a journal that had grown from three pages to seventeen in under twenty-four hours and was threatening to become a manuscript. The annotations were meticulous, cross-referenced, and written in a script so small it required magnification.

The door swung inward and Tiberon Drakenfell walked through it as if the door had been expecting him and had opened itself out of respect.

It had not. Hyran had opened it without knocking. Something he never did with Maelor and something that Maelor had never once stopped being offended by.

Maelor’s pen paused. His mismatched eyes moved from the journal to Tiberon to Hyran and back to Tiberon.

“Alpha Drakenfell. To what do I owe—”

“I need to speak with Nightspire. Now.” Tiberon’s tone left no room for negotiation.

Maelor looked at Hyran. Hyran’s face gave him nothing, which gave him everything, because Hyran’s nothing was calibrated and the calibration was currently set to “this is above your clearance but you’re the taxi.”

“Of course,” Maelor said.

He closed his journal. Shelved it. Pulled his robes straight with the automatic precision of a man who was about to enter the presence of his liege lord and would sooner die than appear in damaged formalwear. The volcano may have taken one set of robes but it did not take his dignity.

A portal tore open in the center of his study. The edges were clean, sharp, the emerald-tinged gold of a half-Fae mage whose portals were as aesthetically precise as his penmanship. The air on the other side smelled different. Colder. Carrying the mineral tang of deep stone and old magic and the particular atmospheric signature of a kingdom built into mountains that preferred to remain unfound.

Tiberon walked through first. The King of Drakenfell entered Nightspire’s throne room the way he entered every room: like he owned the room and everyone inside of it.

Hyran followed. Maelor came last, the portal sealing behind him with a whisper.

The throne room was a cold-cocked, crystal-clear declaration of dominance: every surface designed to make you feel small, every shadow engineered to make you feel watched, every inch communicating that Nightspire’s hospitality had terms and the terms were his.

Riven Nightspire sat on his throne like a silk-wrapped, scheme-soaked spider king who had turned paranoia into a governing philosophy and surveillance into a fine art, and the art was hanging in every shadow in the room. His green eyes were clever, carrying the particular luminance of a mind that was always three moves ahead and found the present tense quaint.

His robes were black and green. His fingers rested on the armrests of a throne carved from obsidian so pure it looked like frozen shadow.

“Drakenfell. This is a first,” Nightspire said, with a nod that carried a curiosity that he would never voice directly. Any foreign sovereign traveling to his throne room unannounced was unprecedented. The last time one had walked into this throne room carrying weight like this, the continent had changed shape.

The gears in Nightspire’s mind were turning fast because the board was rearranging itself. Tiberon Drakenfell showing up unannounced was the most unexpected move he had received in months.

The game just got interesting. Nightspire loved interesting. It was the only currency he valued more than information, because information was a tool and interesting was a reason to use it.

Good news was sent by a raven or through his master mage. It did not require a king to walk through a portal into the throne room. Which meant this was bad news, Tiberon needed a favor, or something else entirely.

’Something else entirely’ was Nightspire’s favorite category.

Tiberon stopped at a distance that was close enough for conversation and far enough for dignity. Two kings. Two kingdoms. A relationship built on mutual benefit and mutual wariness and the shared understanding that trust between men like them was a negotiated instrument rather than an earned emotion.

“It is,” Tiberon acknowledged.

“I’m honored.”

“Don’t be. The circumstances are not honoring.”

“They rarely are, when kings travel without retinue.” Nightspire’s eyes moved to Hyran. “You brought a mage instead of a guard. Which means whatever you’re carrying requires explanation more than protection. Interesting.”

“You’re reading the room.”

“My favorite hobby, Drakenfell.”

A true statement. Tiberon collected whiskey. Nightspire collected rooms. He read them, understood them, and stored their contents in a mind that forgot nothing and forgave less.

“A word,” Tiberon said. “In private.”

Nightspire lifted two fingers from the armrest. The gesture was small, economical, carrying the authority of a man whose smallest movements produced the largest responses. Every guard in the throne room turned and exited through side doors that closed without sound. Maelor inclined his head and withdrew to the anteroom. Once the door closed behind him, on the other side, he stood perfectly still, listening, because Maelor Vantheos was a loyal servant of Nightspire and a professional of the highest caliber and also a man whose curiosity was a physical force that his ethics were constantly at war with.

The walls were too thick. Of course they were. Nightspire’s walls were built to contain secrets the way vaults were built to contain gold, and Maelor’s curiosity was not a key that fit this particular lock.

He still was going to try.

Inside the room, Hyran remained.

Nightspire’s eyes flicked to the Master Mage, then to Tiberon. The question was in the glance: him too?

“My Master Mage stays,” Tiberon said.

Nightspire accepted that with a single blink. The blink was agreement and assessment and the filing of a data point.

“Well then,” Nightspire said, leaning forward by a single degree. “You have my attention, Drakenfell. I trust you’ll make it worth the trip.”

The sentence was an invoice disguised as hospitality. Nightspire had cleared his room. Dismissed his guards. Permitted a foreign mage to remain. The cost of these concessions was mounting, and the payment was information, and the information had better be exceptional.
