The Alpha’s Unclaimed Mate Chapter 591

Chapter 591 Get Back In The Fucking Bed

Serena jerked back so fast she almost tripped over her own slippers.

Her face was the color of a sunset having a panic attack, red from the neck up, ears included, the kind of full-body blush that started in the chest and colonized every square inch of visible skin with the enthusiasm of a wildfire discovering dry brush.

Gavriel blinked.

Once. Twice. Three times. His eyes were unfocused, swimming with the particular glaze of a man dragged out of deep sleep by a sensation his brain had registered and his consciousness hadn’t caught up to yet. The blinks were slow, heavy, each one a system reboot that loaded approximately twelve percent of his operating capacity before giving up and trying again.

His green magic snapped around her like a reflex.

The emerald light erupted from his skin before his eyes finished focusing, wrapping Serena in a cocoon of warm, pulsing energy that his body had decided was more urgent than his brain’s participation. The green found her reserves, found the depleted pink, found every hollow place the volcano had carved out, and started filling them with the cheerful, unsolicited efficiency of a golden retriever fetching a ball nobody threw.

Gavriel looked down.

A blanket was draped across his chest. A pillow was wedged behind his neck at the exact angle that had eliminated the crick he’d been building for six hours. Both were new. Both had appeared while he was unconscious. Both carried the faint scent of healing tonic and the unmistakable fingerprints of a woman whose caretaking instincts operated on a hair trigger and zero self-preservation.

His gaze traveled to Fin.

Finnick Shadowclaw, Alpha King, apex predator, the kind of man whose reputation preceded him by a full zip code, was flat on his back, properly horizontal, blanket tucked to his shoulders, spooning a pillow with both arms and the full-body commitment of a man whose subconscious believed the pillow was a person and was prepared to defend it with lethal force.

His gaze traveled to Dexmon.

The Crown Prince of Drakenfell had a pillow behind his head, a blanket pulled to his collar, and was mumbling something about ownership laws while his fists twitched beneath the fabric.

Gavriel looked back at Serena.

Serena, who was standing frozen with her face scarlet and was wearing silk pajamas and slippers. Hair damp. Eyes wide. Radiating the very particular frequency of a woman who had been caught doing something wrong. She looked like a burglar who’d broken in to leave presents and gotten caught on the way out.

She had tucked them in.

All three of them.

The realization landed in Gavriel’s chest like a warm fist and stayed there. She had gotten out of bed, unhooked her own medical equipment, bathed, and then instead of resting, instead of doing any of the fourteen things Alaric had ordered her to do, she had gone around the room and taken care of three grown men who were too stubborn to take care of themselves.

Pillows. Blankets. Adjustments.

His throat tightened.

He wanted to say something. Wanted to crack a joke, wanted to call her Frostborne in the tone that meant twelve things at once, wanted to tell her that no one had tucked him in since he was nine years old and the fact that she had done it while her own body was running on borrowed everything made him want to simultaneously laugh and put his fist through a wall.

He kept his mouth shut because the two men in this room would wake up if he opened it, and waking them up would end this moment. This specific, unrepeatable moment where Serena Frostborne was standing in dim light looking at him like she’d been caught committing a felony of tenderness and didn’t know the statute of limitations.

Then his eyes dropped to her arm.

The I.V. was gone.

The tubing that Alaric had spent twenty minutes calibrating, the hydration drip that was supposed to run for another four hours minimum, the medical equipment that was actively keeping her alive. Gone. Removed. By her. With her own hands. So she could get up and tuck in three assholes who didn’t deserve it.

Every ounce of warmth in Gavriel’s expression evaporated.

He gave her the flattest look in the recorded history of flat looks. Flatter than Hyran’s disappointment. Flatter than Tiberon’s patience. A look so comprehensively, devastatingly flat that it could have been used to level a foundation.

The look said one thing.

Get back in the bed.

Serena’s chin lifted by a fraction. The fraction was defiance. Her eyes narrowed. The narrowing was a counter-argument that required zero words and communicated a full thesis.

I feel fine.

Gavriel’s jaw shifted left by one millimeter. The millimeter was a rebuttal.

No. You fucking don’t.

Her eyebrow arched. The arch was an appeal to reason.

I’m standing. Clearly I’m fine.

His head tilted by two degrees toward the bed. The tilt was a final warning.

You are standing because you are stubborn. Stubborn and fine are different words. Get in the bed or I wake them up.

Her eyes widened. The widening was horror. Both of them glanced at Fin, whose arms were locked around the pillow with the structural commitment of a man whose unconscious body had already demonstrated what happened when it detected her nearby. Then at Dexmon, whose fists were still clenched and whose sleep-mumbling had progressed to what sounded like a territorial dispute over something round and shiny.

Waking either of them would produce chaos. Waking both would produce an extinction event. Serena knew it. Gavriel knew she knew it. The knowing was leverage and he was using it without shame.

Her shoulders dropped by half an inch.

The dropping was surrender.

She crossed the room on silent slippers, climbed onto the far edge of the bed beside Fin without disturbing him, and pulled the blanket over her legs with the resigned acceptance of a woman who had lost a war conducted entirely through eyebrows and jaw angles.
