Chapter 1527
[ 581 words ]
“No way!” Melvin Steele pursed his lips, the smile never leaving his face. “Janet usually looks so soft-spoken, but her rebuttals were incredibly sharp.”
“She’s tough on the inside!” Juniper looked up at Janet, the corners of her mouth curling into a smile full of admiration. “Growing up in that kind of environment, enduring all that hardship and coldness, she doesn’t open her heart to just anyone. Melvin, you’ve got a long and difficult road ahead of you.”
Melvin listened quietly, his gaze deepening.
It was just difficult, not impossible.
And he loved a good challenge.
“Juniper, can you tell me what Janet’s hobbies are?” Melvin leaned in, flashing a flattering smile.
“Of course.” Juniper nodded, slowly pulling her phone from her pocket and pulling up her payment code. “How much you find out depends on how much you’re willing to pay.”
Melvin frowned, took out his phone, and jabbed at the screen to transfer the money. “Juniper, that old fox is a terrible influence on you.”
“Thanks.”
Seeing the amount, Juniper’s lips curved in satisfaction. She leaned in. “Janet…”
“What? Tell me.”
Melvin immediately perked up his ears, afraid he might miss a single word.
“She’s actually a very boring person. She doesn’t like shopping, isn’t a foodie, and doesn’t care for jewelry. She just loves to read.”
“That’s it?”
Melvin frowned, questioning her.
“Yep, that’s all.” Juniper raised an eyebrow, smiling like a mischievous little fox.
“Ha!”
Melvin’s lips twitched as a soft chuckle escaped his throat.
Birds of a feather flock together, huh.
A little fox raised by that old fox.
Loves to read?
Heaven knew, the thing he hated most in this world was reading.
He hadn’t touched a book since he graduated from college.
Three hours later.
The debate competition ended.
Under the combined bombardment of Janet and Kian Holloway, the opposing debaters were left speechless.
In the end, Janet’s team won.
“Juniper, your advice was seriously so helpful.” Janet ran over to Juniper and affectionately linked arms with. her
almost fell into their trap a few
times, thank goodness I had you.”
Juniper patted her cheek. “Your logic was clear. You would have won even without my suggestions.”
“You were indeed amazing.” Melvin, standing nearby, chimed in at the perfect moment. “I’ve been getting into reading lately Janet could you recommend a few books related to civil law?”
Janet’s eyes lit up. “I actually have quite a few. I’ll bring them to you next time.”
“Are you looking for some books, Mr. Steele?”
Before Melvin could answer, Kian suddenly walked over, interjecting with a smile. “I have several great ones too, copies you can’t even find in the library. Yoan go grab them for you right now if you want.”
“Sure.”
Melvin gave him a dark look, his lips twitching as he spoke in a flat tone.
“I’ll go get them right now.”
Kian, eager to show off, bolted toward the dorms. “Just wait right here, Mr. Steele.”
It was a twenty-five-minute round trip from there to the dormitories.
“Juniper, weren’t you hungry?”
Melvin tossed his car keys to Juniper with a smirk. “Take Janet to grab a bite. I’ll join you guys in a bit.”
“Alright.”
Seeing right through his intentions, Juniper didn’t expose him and led Janet away.
However, they hadn’t even been seated for three minutes when Melvin arrived.
Janet looked confused. “That was fast. Where are the books?”
“Oh.” Melvin’s lips twitched as he spun a serious-sounding lie. “I went to the restroom and totally forgot about it. I’ll just borrow them next time.”
Meanwhile.
Kian, carrying a stack of heavy books, sprinted the entire round trip without daring to
stop for a breath, panting like a dog.
But when he arrived at the spot…
“Where did everyone go?”
