After they finished eating.
Juniper had classes in the afternoon and planned to head back to the dorm for a quick nap.
With the debate competition over, Janet could leave early. She was originally supposed to live on campus, but worried about her mother’s health, she specifically applied to commute. Whenever she had free time, she stayed home to keep Saskia company.
“Where are the books?” Melvin stood up and instinctively picked up Janet’s laptop bag.
“Huh?” Janet’s outstretched hand grasped empty air, and she hurriedly replied, “All the books are at home.”
“Alright.” Melvin lifted his chin, his tone gentle. “I’ll drive you back, and I can grab the books while I’m at it.”
“O-okay.”
It made perfect sense, so Janet couldn’t refuse. Like a startled little bird, she followed Melvin to the garage and instinctively reached for the back door handle.
“Treating me like your chauffeur?” Melvin held her laptop bag, staring at her with a half-smile.
“No.”
Janet didn’t understand the unspoken rules of these things, but she was smart enough to immediately move to the passenger seat.
She sat up straight, her back rigid, staring straight ahead.
Her gaze was so determined she looked like she was about to swear an oath of allegiance.
“Relax, I’m not going to eat you.” Melvin slid into the driver’s seat and tossed her laptop bag into the back.
Then, he leaned over, getting closer to Janet.
Startled, Janet took a deep breath and shrank back against her seat, her eyelashes fluttering wildly like butterfly wings.

Melvin buckled her seatbelt for her, staring at her with a deep smile. “There are snacks in the glove compartment. Grab whatever you’d like.”
Janet looked over and sure enough, the compartment was stuffed full of snacks. Was this prepared specifically for Juniper, that little glutton?
Mr. Steele really was a great guy.
“I just ate, so I’m not hungry. Thank you, Mr. Steele.” Janet offered a polite smile. “Suit yourself,” Melvin replied.
The car started and drove steadily down the road. The cabin was incredibly quiet.
“Ahem.”
Melvin cleared his throat, taking the initiative to strike up a conversation. “Are you adjusting well to campus life?”
“It’s going great.”
Janet blinked, answering earnestly.
“You’re only a freshman. You’re still
young, so you have to keep your

eyes peeled when making friends ” Melvin said, his low voice carrying a pointed undertone.
“Thanks. I will.” Janet, honest to a fault, smiled until her eyes turned into little crescents. “All my

classmates and friends have been really nice.”
“Is that so?” Melvin gripped the steering wheel, a cold scoff slipping from his throat.
“I wouldn’t be so sure.”
That guy, Kian whatever-his-name-was, couldn’t keep his eyes off of Janet.
“Huh?” Janet turned to look at him, her clear eyes filled with confusion.
“I mean, some people are very good at pretending, but they’re rotten to the core.”
“I’ll be careful,” Janet nodded. “Thank you, Mr. Steele.”
“Don’t be so polite, we’re basically family.” Melvin glanced at the girl Her face was smaller than his palm, and she looked incredibly cute when she smiled.
Damn it.
How could there be such a cute girl in the world?
“I have to be,” Janet replied softly.
Her mother had reminded her that Juniper’s family was very powerful.
Even though they treated them like family, she couldn’t take their kindness for granted.
She couldn’t let it go to her head just because she had their backing.
She still needed to maintain basic manners.
“You’re quite well-mannered, kiddo.” A reckless smile curled Melvin’s lips.
Hearing this, Janet furrowed her delicate brows. “I’m not a kid.”
“Mhm.” Melvin was in a great mood. A joyous smile spread across his handsome face as he drawled, “Good thing you’re not a kid, otherwise—”
“Otherwise what?”
