Chapter 1529
[ 584 words ]
Janet had no idea what he meant.
“You’ll find out later,” Melvin answered ambiguously.
He parked the car.
Janet walked in front, with Melvin following behind, carrying her laptop bag.
Having never spent so much time alone with him, Janet’s nerves were constantly on edge.
Distracted, she completely missed the step in front of her.
“Ah-“
Janet lost her balance, letting out a shriek as the color drained from her face.
In her panic, a large, firm hand suddenly caught her around the waist, holding her steady.
“Are you okay?” Melvin looked down at her, his voice laced with concern.
Janet gathered her wits and realized just how close they were. They were so close she could clearly trace Melvin’s handsome features.
Especially those dark, bottomless eyes beneath thick lashes, staring intently back at her.
They were like a stormy sea; if she wasn’t careful, she’d drown in them.
Staring at Melvin, Janet found herself momentarily captivated.
“What are you looking at?” Noticing her distraction, Melvin frowned. “Did you twist your ankle? Do you need to go to the hospital?”
“N-no.” Snapping back to reality, Janet immediately pulled away, a little flustered. “Thanks. I’m fine.”
“As long as you’re okay.” Melvin breathed a sigh of relief. He pressed the elevator button and softly reminded her, “Watch your step.”
Janet pressed her lips together and stepped inside.
A moment later.
The elevator arrived at the top floor.
Melvin followed Janet into the apartment.
Saskia had gone out for groceries, so she wasn’t home.
Janet poured Melvin a glass of water, then headed to the study to fetch the books.
This was Melvin’s first time here, and he looked around with curiosity.
His gaze was drawn to a black hair tie with a rhinestone on the coffee table.
He picked it up, examined it, and upon hearing movement, smoothly slipped it into his pocket.
“There are quite a few.”
Janet was only five-foot-three with slender arms and legs. Carrying such a thick stack of books, she looked as clumsy as a little penguin.
Yes.
A very adorable little penguin.
Watching her, Melvin’s mood inexplicably brightened.
“If I don’t understand something, can I ask you?” Melvin took the books and flipped through them casually.
They were packed densely with text.
What was this nonsense?
“Of course.”Good Samaritan Janet smiled and nodded.
“Great.”Melvin seized the
opportunity pulling out his phone

easier to chat.”
“Okay.”
After exchanging contacts, Janet noticed Melvin wasn’t making a move to leave, so she offered politely. My man went grocery shopping. Why don’t you stay for dinner, Mr. Steele?”
“I’d love to.”
Melvin answered without hesitation; it was exactly what he’d been hoping for.
Janet couldn’t bring herself to smile. Her awkwardness was written all over her face.
She was only ever fully relaxed around Juniper; with anyone else, she felt incredibly restrained.
With Melvin there today, she hadn’t even eaten her fill at lunch.
And now he was staying for dinner…
Would her nerves, stretched tight all day, finally snap?
“I’m just kidding, I have things to do Seeing the little lady pouting clearly not thrilled about him stav
Melvin didn’t want to rush things. If he scared her off, it would be a disaster.
“I’ll get going.”
Melvin grabbed the books and stepped into the elevator, his gaze fixed deeply on Janet. “See you tomorrow.”
Tomorrow?
Janet froze for a second before remembering he was attending the training program at Eclara University.
Down in the garage.
Melvin set the books aside and opened Janet’s social media feed.
Her latest post was about the debate competition.
In the photo, Janet was smiling brightly, holding her award certificate.
So sweet.
Melvin hit the like button.
He swiped to the next photo.
Melvin realized Kian was actually in the group picture.
How annoying.
The man’s smile vanished, and he instantly un-liked the post.
