Chapter : 939
Judy’s POV
I stared at the two of them, dumbfounded. I couldn’t have heard her correctly; Nan was pregnant?
A long time ago, she admitted that she couldn’t have children. But from the way she was looking at me, I knew she wasn’t joking. At that moment, I realized how pale she was… how distant she almost seemed today. She had a faraway look in her eyes before she walked down the aisle, and I wondered if it had anything to do with the fact that she was pregnant.
When did she even find out about this? And why hadn’t she told me sooner?
“Pregnant?” I asked, finally finding my voice. “How long have you known?”
“Not long,” Nan said quickly. “We just found out a few minutes ago.”
“That’s why we went to the drug store,” Chester explained, draping a protective arm around Nan’s shoulders. “She was feeling sick all last night, and she was having trouble keeping anything down this morning. She was lightheaded and unwell. I kept telling her we should go to the doctors, but she refused because of your wedding.” My eyes went back to Nan, and I saw tears in them.
“I’m your maid of honor. I couldn’t miss your wedding because of a stomach bug,” she told me, sniffling. “I took some medicine, and I was almost fine this morning. Except when we got here, I ran into the bathroom to throw up before putting on this dress. I thought I was going to pass out when we walked down the aisle, and standing there was like torture because I was terrified I was going to puke during your vows.”
My heart broke for Nan; I couldn’t imagine what she must have been going through in that moment.
As soon as you said you guys kissed, I knew I had to get out of there, so I ran down the aisle and tried to find a hiding spot outside somewhere. But your mother ended up following me because she saw me running. She held my hair back while I threw up in a bush, and it was the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to me.”
“Oh, Nan…” I said, stepping closer to her.
She swallowed, her throat working overtime.
“When I finally vomited everything out of my stomach, she went to get Eliza, and she examined me real quick. That’s when she brought up the possibility of being pregnant. At first, didn’t want to entertainthe thought and get my hopes up. I’ve been told by various doctors that i would never be able to have
children. It was almost too good to be true if that were the case. But she told me that I should get to a drug store and pick up a pregnancy test anyway, just in case.”
“So, you did,” I breathed, shaking my head. “You and Chester went to the drug store.”
She nodded, leaning into Chester even more, and he tightened his hold around her.
“Yeah,” she breathed. “We went to get a pregnancy test. The drugstore didn’t have any public bathrooms, so we had to use the one here. We arrive a few minutes after you did, and your mother asked if we had the test told her yes and that we couldn’t take the test just yet. She showed us where the bathroom was, and we’ve been here ever since.”
“And you found out that you’re pregnant…” I breathed again; this time it was less of
a question and more of amazement.
She nodded, ears nowt discuss flowing down her cheeks.
“We were just discussing what we were going to do now,” Nan explained. “I wanted
to tell you… but it’s your wedding day, and I don’t want to take away from—”
Before she could finish her
sentence, I threw my arms around
her and pulled her closely into me Tears were flowing down my cheeks before could stop them. My best friend was expecting a baby This was one of the best pieces of news I’ve had in a long time, and I couldn’t believe that I was getting to share the happiest day of my life with my best friend.
This had to have been the happiest day of her life, too… finding out that she was carrying a baby for herself. This is all she’s ever wanted besides becoming a well- known chef and owning her own 5-star restaurant. For as long as I’ve known her… Nan has always wanted to be a mother.
“I’m so happy for you,” I breathed.
“There you are,” I heard a voice behind me, and without looking, I already knew that it was Irene. “It’s time to cut the cake. Matt is about to wolf out otherwise. And.. oh my goddess… your makeup!”
