“I’m not babysitting. I’m guiding, protecting, and supporting the two of you.”
“How are you always so confident, so controlled,” I whisper. Somehow, we’ve moved closer to each other.
“I’m not always in control. Sometimes I struggle to maintain control,” he says softly, his eyes dropping to my lips. I feel my heartbeat quicken and my mouth goes dry.
“I’ve never noticed,” I say to him. Without conscious thought, I reach up and run my fingers over Christian’s forehead, sliding the wayward lock back, only for it to fall forward again. His hair is soft, like silk.
I feel the tension between us, like electricity bouncing between our bodies, awakening mine in unexpected ways.
“I, uh he says, his face leaning toward mine.
A sharp knock at the door jolts us out of whatever trance we were just in. The two of us jump away from each other like we were shocked.
“Christian, are you ready?” Shane asks.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’ll be right there,” he says. His chest heaving, his dark eyes still watching me.
Then, without another word, he tears his eyes away and heads for the door. As he reaches for the door, he turns and looks at me once more, then opens the door and heads off with Shane.
As soon as he’s gone, I finally feel like I can breathe again.

Goddess, I almost kissed her. She smelled so good. Her fingers stroking my hair sent electric tingles through my body, igniting it with desire. Then she’d stared up at me with those big green eyes, her perfect lips slightly open just begging for me to kiss her and taste her.

“So, what’s the plan?” Shane asks me.
The plan is that I don’t lose control and fuck your sister while she’s my ward.
Of course, that’s not what I say to Shane.
“What do you think we should do?” I ask him, using this as a teaching opportunity.
“I’ve been thinking about that. I think we should leave Dorian for last and interview the others individually first. Depending on what we get from the others, we’ll have a better idea of what to expect from Dorian,” he says, watching me to see if I approve.
“I think that’s a great idea. Let’s go with that.”
“Yeah?” he asks excitedly.
I smile. “Yeah.”
Shane feels a lot like the little brother I never had. Unlike his sister, he never seems to tire of my company, which is good, since we’ll be
spending a lot of time together in the next year and a half.
“Do you have places where you can interview these warriors privately?” I ask, diverting to Braden’s office to get the chalice for the warriors in the cells to accept me as their Alpha.
“I think there’s a room down there for interrogation,” he says.
“Let’s double check before we begin. Do you have an idea who you’d like to interview first?”
“I was thinking we should start with the ones who seemed less against Enya and I, then work our way to the harder ones. That way, we might get intel we can use against the ones that might really be against us.”
“Again, a well–thought–out plan,” I tell him as we get to the top of the stairwell for the cells.
I nod at the guard. “Any problems?”
