Another tear slips out as she tries and fails to take a deep breath.
“Breathe,” I say, putting my mouth near her ear. “Follow my breaths,” I tell her.
“I’m sorry,” she whimpers, her voice and breath are both still choppy.
“Don’t apologize. Just follow my breaths,” I say as I begin rubbing her head in the way I know she likes. I leave one hand on her stomach, putting light pressure so she knows she’s safe while I breathe near her ear and rub her head.
It takes some time, but I finally see her body start to relax and her breaths start coming easier.
“You’re doing great,” I tell her.
I look up at the clock and realize that time is almost up. I look around and see that others are nearly done.

starts to get off the table, I hold her there, wrapping my arms. around her.
“ Just stay here a minute,” I say, watching as the others leave. She leans her head on my shoulder and James gives me a questioning look, silently asking if Christina is okay before walking out.
I nod, but I feel her body starting to shake again and then I feel the wet drop of tears on my shoulder.
When the room is empty, I lift her face up to mine, stepping between her legs so we’re nearly eye to eye.
“Do you want to talk about it?” I ask her gently.
More tears begin to fall, and I gently wipe them away.
“I’m sorry I disappointed you,” she whispers.
I frown. “You didn’t,” I tell her.
“Isn’t that what you were feeling today? Disappointment?” she asks.
“No. I was feeling frustration. I’m not disappointed in you. Not at all. I’m frustrated that you hold yourself back, but I’m never disappointed in you. Most days I’m in awe of you. You are an amazing woman, a truly incredible woman. I just want you to be able to see yourself the way that I and others see you. Is that what these tears are about?” I ask her.
She nods. “I mean, the rest hurt too, but yeah, that’s what hurt the most. That maybe …”

She nods.

She nods and some of the hollowness that was in her eyes earlier is gone.
“Come on, I’ll carry you back to your room,” I tell her, scooping her into my arms.
“No one had to carry the other Alphas,” she murmurs.
I look at her. “You’ve been mentally carrying me all week, Alpha Christina. If you feel the need to pick me up and carry me back to my room, you can,” I say, getting a hint of a smile.
“Let me carry you,” I say.
She nods, curling up against me and tucking her face against my throat. It feels so natural, so good to have her here, that I walk slower than I normally would back to the dorms. When we get to her room, I take off her robe and lay her in her bed.
“Do you want to put something on to sleep in?” I ask, looking around her immaculately clean room for a hint of what she sleeps in.
