He sets his glass aside and settles into the seat. “You didn’t know our Dad before he met your mother.” His eyes glass over for a moment. “I didn’t know how difficult it was for him losing my mother. But ever since I met Caroline, the thought of losing her …” he stops, pressing a hand to his chest. “Just the thought of losing her makes my chest hurt, makes my heart ache. I can’t imagine having to go through that, then forcing myself to live for my pack and my son, which is what Dad did. He lived for me. But his life was a shell of what it had been before. I didn’t know that, but I heard it from his closest friends, people like Alpha James that Dad had been larger than life before the death of my mother. I was so worried when he handed the pack to me that he’d let himself wither away and die. Thank the goddess, James got him to come here. It gave dad a reason to live, but he was still complacent about his life. He was surviving, not living. Does that make sense?” he asks.
“Yes,” I say, not sure where he’s going with this conversation.
He smiles, lifting his glass again as his eyes glaze over. “I knew something had changed about a year before I confronted him. I waited, hoping he’d tell me, but when he didn’t, I finally asked who the girl was. He was all kinds of twisted up and you know Dad NEVER gets twisted up about anything. That’s how I knew it was a woman.”

“Yeah, well, mom is a lot calmer than I am.”
“Your mother’s history is a lot different than yours though. She lost her parents when she was a teenager and that changes a person. I’ve seen it with some of the Alphas I’ve grown up with. But she had the same feelings of not being able to live up to the expectations of the people she loves. Back then, Dane was her only family, the one she never wanted to disappoint.
