Chapter 712 There is no turning back
No one asked questions and more rejections took place including Liah and Corvine’s. The threads snapped one by one, fading into the night like dying embers. However, she was still bonded with Voren, and Ravyn was still bonded with Seraphine.
Voren and Seraphine’s bonds remained unbreakable too. The crimson threads pulsed with stubborn light, refusing to yield, refusing to break.
“My bond isn’t breaking.” Ravyn complained, his voice tight with frustration and something that sounded almost like fear.
“Same here.” Liah added her voice, her brow furrowed with confusion and unease.
The moon goddess smiled, the expression soft and knowing on her childlike face. It was a smile that held centuries of wisdom, of patience, of waiting for this very moment.
“Not everything can be said in public. This matter involves only those it concerns. Voren, Sera, Ravyn, Corvine, Liah, Daisy, you move to the side. Shaman, get me Madison, Einstein, Vladimir, Kyle, and Humphrey. The rest can continue in the celebration as you wait for the real bond.”
Sitting positions changed as the listed parties arrived. One side was filled with excitement, music in the background, barbecue and drinks, laughter and chatter rising into the night sky. The other side was quiet and serious, the air heavy with unspoken truths and ancient secrets.
“Daisy, I will answer your question now.”
The moon goddess began, her voice carrying across the small gathering with the weight of absolute authority.
“I never gave you a Fenrir wolf, though someone had to bear it. As a child, you allowed envy to fill your heart and walked in the way of your parents. I allowed them to swap you with Sera’s parents, so you’d have a proper upbringing but your mother found a way to bring you to the pack house and feed you with all the poison you learned to enjoy.”
“But…” Daisy wanted to say when the moon goddess lifted her hands, silencing her with a gesture.
“I haven’t finished. You had the chance to be better. You could have taken advantage of Seraphine’s blood running through your veins but you didn’t. I was preparing you for an Alpha, but you got greedy. Don’t blame me for listening to your mother. She raised Sera too, and Sera could have chosen to be evil but she always chose to do the right, even when you and your mother made her life a living hell. Are you still asking me now, why you have a Fenrir?”
Daisy shook her head, allowing her tears to fall. The salty streams carved paths down her cheeks, dripping onto her lap. Her shoulders trembled with silent sobs. “I’m sorry. I was wrong.”
“Now let’s start from where it all began.” The moon goddess stated, gaining everyone’s attention. The air grew still, the music fading into the background, the laughter dying on lips. Every eye was fixed on her, every breath held.
“You must have all heard of the Lycans, right?” She asked, trying to work against time. The clock was ticking, the Blood Moon approaching, and there was so much to say, so much to reveal.
Everyone around the moon goddess nodded their heads as she continued to speak, her voice weaving through the night like an ancient song.
“The Lycans have always been stronger than werewolves, but not so powerful. They are also my creation, but the most rebellious. Their leaders have always gone through training that none of you can imagine, all because they want to rule the world.”
She paused, letting the words sink in. “They are also very secretive, cunning, and manipulative, thriving on the things I hate, such as sorcery, but their hunt for white wolves is not entirely their fault.”
Seraphine could feel a cold shiver down her spine, the sensation crawling up her vertebrae like icy fingers. But she was grateful for Voren’s protective arms around her, his warmth a shield against the chill of the moon goddess’s words.
“Before I clear this mystery, you all have to know what happened from the beginning. It wasn’t entirely the Lycans’ fault. When I created your race, I wanted them to be strong and capable, and yet, be filled with love and wisdom. I gave the mate bond to pair each werewolf for destiny and when destiny takes charge, love blossoms in the end.”
Her voice softened, a hint of sorrow threading through the words.
“Yes, love wasn’t part of my plans, but the safety of the werewolf race. I created the white wolves to be the protectors of the werewolf race but they were too proud of their abilities to live among their kind so they went far from the wolf lands.”
She paused, her ancient eyes sweeping across the faces before her.
“While I was trying to make this correction to send them back to their kind, your forefathers kept performing rituals under the Blood Moon to remove the mate bond so their mates wouldn’t feel them cheating, so they wouldn’t feel each other’s pain, so they could do whatever they liked, claiming to want to fall in love like humans but you are not humans.”
Her voice hardened, the softness bleeding away into something cold and unyielding.
“I knew love alone would not be able to keep this race. The mate bond was what made this race special, but I granted it, waiting for the day they would realize their mistake and beg me to make the correction, but they continued in their vanity, selfishness and greed. Then the tears of the she-wolves reached me. They were the ones greatly affected by the whole thing, and only a few werewolves themselves.”
She drew a breath, the air around her crackling with power.
“That’s when I decided to use another means to make the correction but let me start with the white wolves. Living away from their kind brought issues. They thought their powers were strong enough to give them comfortable lives but they were wrong.”
Her eyes grew distant, lost in memory.
“Famine came hard, and I refused to hear their supplications because they had wasted their powers and were of no value to me, so they turned to the Lycans. The Lycans would not tell you because they are bound by an oath of secrecy and yes, they have more secrets than the entire werewolf race put together.”
The silence that followed was deafening, the weight of her words pressing down on everyone present.
“As for the white wolves, it was agreed between them that the Lycans would take care of them and in return, they would give a white wolf during each full moon every year. Whatever the white wolf would be used for was not the concern of the white wolves.”
Her voice dropped, heavy with judgment.
“This agreement was sealed with the blood of the Alpha of the white wolves and this treaty continued for a century until the white wolves realized they could not keep up with the demand. They were reducing in number instead of growing, so they wanted to cancel the agreement without stopping the benefit they were getting from the Lycans and began to hide their kind.”
She paused, letting the weight of the revelation settle.
“That’s when the Lycans began to hunt them down and to be honest, making a deal with the Lycans is like making a deal with the devil himself. There is no turning back.”
