Naomi nearly threw the cushion resting on her lap at him. But she stopped herself at the last second. Cale was just as intimidating as Falcon. “Are you out of your mind? Do you actually think that’s funny, asking me something like that?”
Hearing the sharp edge in her voice, the unmistakable anger, Cale dismissed the possibility immediately. So it wasn’t about romance. Falcon wasn’t after Naomi to make her his lover or partner. But then…
“All right,” Cale said, shifting slightly in his seat. “Then has he ever asked you about the tattoo you have?”
Naomi frowned again, but then she shook her head. “I’m sure he’s never asked. He doesn’t even know about it. I’ve kept my promise to Uncle Yuyang.” Her eyes turned sharp as they fixed on him. “Do you doubt my story, Mr. Miller?”
Cale nodded once. “No. I don’t doubt it.” His tone remained calm, measured. “I’m just trying to understand what reason he has to chase you all the way here. As for your debt, wherever it was tied to, I’ve already had someone take care of it.”
Naomi fell silent. For a brief moment, she wanted to thank him. But the memory of how infuriating he had been the night before rose up just as quickly, and she turned her face away instead. She was still annoyed.
“Is it possible something happened to you when you met him?” Cale asked.
Naomi crossed her arms over her chest. “Like what?”
“Maybe… you fainted?”
It took her a moment to process the question, but then something surfaced in her mind. That day. Yes, that day when everything had begun. The second time they met, when everything tied to Don Falcon started to unravel, tangled with consequences she hadn’t fully understood back then.
The color drained from Naomi’s face in an instant.
“I thought so,” Cale murmured. He let out a long breath, pressing his fingers to his temple as if piecing something together.
“Did he examine my body?” Naomi asked, disbelief flickering in her eyes. Almost instinctively, she wrapped her arms around herself, a wave of disgust and irritation rising at the thought that he might have.
“Maybe he caught a glimpse of the tattoo without meaning to and decided to look into it,” Cale replied evenly. “After that, did your life go back to normal? Did things settle down again?”
Without realizing it, Naomi shook her head.
“That makes sense.” Cale rose to his feet and started toward the door. “Now you understand why I’ve been so firm about not letting you leave, don’t you?”
Naomi didn’t answer.
“There’s a strong chance Falcon knows who you are,” Cale continued. “He just doesn’t fully understand what he’s dealing with, which is why he’s acting recklessly, involving himself and chasing you like this.”
Naomi looked at him, her expression uncertain, caught between fear and confusion. “So… what am I supposed to do?”
The room was tucked away on the upper floor of an old building hidden among the glittering lights of Hong Kong. From the outside, it looked like a restaurant long past its prime, the kind of place people had forgotten. But inside, the atmosphere told a different story. Quiet. Sealed off. Filled with people who were not easily encountered.
