Chapter 850
She began to move away from the crowd, trying to slip away unnoticed at the edge of the light.
But Jarrod’s peripheral vision was locked on her. His voice cut through the low murmur of the exhausted trainees. It wasn’t loud, but it carried an authority that made everyone fall silent.
“Trainee Thompson.”
Caroline’s body went rigid. Her feet stopped moving. She was trapped in the spotlight.
Every head turned to stare at her.
Jarrod’s eyes were fixed on the second rucksack strapped to her chest. His tone was perfectly neutral, the voice of a commanding officer seeking clarification on a field matter.
“Explain the additional equipment.”
The question was a masterpiece of plausible deniability. It was a legitimate query within the military framework, yet it was aimed directly at her, a thread of connection only he could pull.
Before Caroline could answer, Brenna stirred, her voice weak but desperate. “Report, sir. It’s mine. I… I couldn’t keep up.”
Jarrod didn’t look at Brenna. His gaze remained fixed on Caroline, waiting for her official response.
Caroline took a deep, steadying breath. She met his gaze, her own eyes as empty and cold as a vacant building.
“Report, Colonel,” she said, her voice a flat monotone. “Trainee O’Malley was unable to continue carrying her assigned load. I assumed responsibility for her equipment. We are a team.”
She stressed the last three words, wrapping her individual action in the unassailable logic of unit cohesion.
Jarrod gave a single, sharp nod. There was no praise, no criticism. Just a silent acknowledgment.
He turned his attention to Instructor Sharpe. “Take all substandard personnel for restorative stretching, then dismiss them to their barracks.”
The order was a direct override. It went straight past Sloane, the instructor in charge.
Sloane’s face tightened. It was a public rebuke, a clear and deliberate undermining of her authority in front of her trainees.
“Yes, sir!” Sharpe replied instantly, relieved to have a clear directive from a higher power. She immediately began to herd the exhausted trainees.
Having achieved his objective, confirming Caroline’s safety and terminating the brutal exercise in a way that didn’t expose their connection, Jarrod turned without another word. He walked back to the SUV, his mission complete.
Melanie watched his retreating back, then looked at Caroline, who was now being helped by other trainees to support Brenna. A dangerous, calculating light gleamed in Melanie’s eyes.
She understood now. To get to the Colonel, she first had to go through Trainee Thompson.
She had to destroy her.
The moment the SUV’s taillights vanished into the darkness, the frozen tension at the finish line began to thaw. K.C. Bell had not gone with it. After opening Jarrod’s rear door, he had stepped away from the vehicle at one curt order from the Colonel, and a motor-pool driver had slid behind the wheel for the return to the compound. K.C. remained at the edge of the floodlights, silent, watchful, and already connected to the command net through the tablet in his hand.
The air, once thick with the Colonel’s authority, now felt thin and volatile.
