She forced her body still, spreading her knees and shoulders against the rotation, turning her swinging weight into the most stable profile she could manage. A suspended casualty posture. She made herself as predictable as possible, bleeding off momentum in tiny, controlled movements, even shifting her weight toward the approaching rescuer.

It was a language of rope and gravity, a tactical dialogue understood only by people who had learned to think while hanging over nothing.

In the command center, Jarrod watched the rescue camera without blinking. The display fed him constant data, her heart-rate spike, her elevation, her oscillation range, the rescuer’s closing distance.

His hands remained useless. His command did not.

“Tell him to approach from her left,” Jarrod said. “Her right side took the tower impact. Do not load that shoulder unless there is no alternative.”

K.C. relayed the order instantly.

On-screen, the rescuer adjusted.

Caroline saw the change and understood.

Jarrod.

Not diving after her. Not destroying protocol. Not turning her into a woman who survived because her husband broke every rule in front of witnesses.

Commanding the rescue.

Saving her without taking the choice she had fought so hard to keep.

In her hiding spot, Melanie’s triumphant smile froze. She saw the floodlights, the emergency line, the rescuer moving exactly where Caroline needed him to be. She knew, with a sickening certainty, whose mind was behind it.

He was not coming himself.

Worse.

He had seen the shape of the trap and turned the entire system against it.

Her perfect plan had just been shattered by an act of impossible, disciplined love.

The ravine wind was a physical beast, tearing at her, trying to spin her off the line and slam her back into the tower. The cold was a deep, aching pain in her bones, and the impact had left her ribs screaming with every breath. Her limbs felt heavy, disconnected. She was reaching her limit.

Then the rescue line hit tension above her.

A safety officer came down the emergency rope in a controlled slide, boots braced against the wet support structure, his helmet lamp cutting a white blade through the rain and floodlight glare. He did not crash into her. He angled in from her left, exactly as someone had ordered, keeping clear of the shoulder that had taken the tower impact.

“Thompson!” the rescuer shouted over the wind. “Do not grab me. Stay still. I have you.”

The command was a lifeline. It pulled her back from the edge of unconsciousness.

His gloved hand clipped a heavy-duty locking carabiner from his rescue harness to the front D-ring on her vest. A second line followed, then a backup tether. Each click was small, metallic, and absolute.

She was not held in a man’s arms. She was secured by procedure, steel, and training.

Through the static in her helmet comm, another voice cut in, lower, colder, unmistakable even when stripped down to command.

“Caroline. Look at the rescuer. Do not close your eyes.”

A sob of pure, unadulterated relief tore from her throat, but the wind swallowed it before it became sound.
