Chapter 845
Caroline felt the air growing thin in her lungs. Not because Sloane’s identity was new; she had already recognized the face from the photograph. She had already watched Sloane move and seen the same lethal grammar written into her body that lived in Jarrod’s. But Reynolds was giving the shape a history now, giving the ghost in the photograph rank, weight, and blood.
“So where is she now?” Brenna asked, her voice hushed. “This shadow?”
A look of genuine sadness crossed Reynolds’s hardened features. “About a year ago, on a mission in Syria. She was covering their withdrawal. She was listed as KIA. Killed In Action.”
The confirmation was a physical blow. Caroline felt the world tilt slightly.
“The Colonel wrote the report himself,” Reynolds added, her voice dropping even lower. “They say it was the only time anyone ever saw him disobey a direct order. He tried to go back for her. His team had to physically restrain him and drag him onto the helicopter.”
The detail was a hammer blow to Caroline’s heart. He disobeyed orders for her. The same man who lived and breathed the chain of command, who had built his entire world on a foundation of rules and regulations, had broken his own code for this woman.
A cold, bitter tide of jealousy rose in her chest, so powerful it was suffocating. She had believed she was the exception, the one person who could make him lose control. Now she understood she had not been the first exception.
Brenna’s face was a mask of sorrow and awe. “My God. She was a hero. What was her name?”
Caroline’s fingernails dug into her palms, the sharp pain a distant, meaningless sensation. She already knew the name, but hearing it spoken with reverence by someone outside Jarrod’s private world felt different. More public. More undeniable.
Instructor Reynolds looked at the young, tired faces around her. She spoke the name with the weight and gravity it deserved.
“Her name was Sloane Hawke.”
The world didn’t shatter all at once. It tightened around Caroline, piece by merciless piece.
The photograph in The Meditations. The name Elena beneath it. Sloane Hawke standing on the field with the same calm violence Caroline had seen in Jarrod. The identical economy of movement. Dr. Reed’s warning. Jarrod’s silence.
It was no longer a jealous guess, no longer a theory stitched together from a hidden photograph and a fighting style. It was a confirmed history.
He hadn’t just known her. She had been his other half. The person he had once been willing to break orders for.
And he had never said a word.
“Rest is over! On your feet! Move!”
Sloane’s voice was a whip crack in the cold night, shattering the brief moment of shared history. The story was finished. The march resumed.
Caroline felt a strange sense of dislocation, as if her mind had separated from her body. She got to her feet, hoisted the heavy rucksack onto her aching shoulders, and fell into line. Her legs moved, her lungs burned, but her consciousness was somewhere else, trapped in the wreckage of what she had just learned.
He tried to go back for her.
