Chapter 888

The rescuer shifted lower, assessing the situation. He saw the fouled bypass line twisted around her leg, the way the compromised span had trapped her in a pendulum that kept loading and unloading the damaged anchor. He pulled a hooked rescue blade from his chest rig and braced the line against his own ascender, creating the counter-pressure Caroline could not provide.

“Hold your knee out,” he ordered.

Caroline forced her body to obey. Pain lit up her side, white and vicious.

The blade sawed once, twice, then bit cleanly through the outer wrap of the trapped line. The rescuer did not cut her primary tether. He cut only the fouled section that was feeding the swing, then locked the remaining tension into his own system.

The violent spinning slowed.

Her vision was starting to tunnel, the impact, the cold, and the wild swing taking their toll.

“Oscillation decreasing,” K.C. Bell’s voice reported over the command net. “Rescue One has primary contact. Backup tether secure.”

High above, in the command center, Jarrod watched the screen without blinking. His right arm remained locked across his torso inside the heavy brace. His splinted left hand hung rigid at his side. He did not touch a console. He did not reach for a weapon. Every ounce of violence in him had been forced into his voice.

“Keep her conscious,” he said. “If she stops answering, haul immediately.”

The order came through Caroline’s helmet a heartbeat later.

“Talk to me, Thompson,” the rescuer demanded. “Name.”

Her tongue felt thick in her mouth. “Caroline Thompson.”

“Pain?”

“Ribs. Right shoulder. Pride.”

The rescuer gave one hard, breathless laugh. “Good. Pride means you’re not dead.”

A second rope dropped beside them, snapping taut in the wind.

Above the ravine, the rescue team began the haul. The first pull lifted some of her weight off the compromised span. Agony flared through Caroline’s side as the harness loaded properly, but the terrifying sideways swing finally stopped.

For the first time since the fall, she could think.

She forced her breathing into rhythm. In. Hold. Out. She made herself a load, not a liability. No flailing. No clutching. No wasted motion. She was no longer trying to survive alone. She was part of a recovery system, and systems worked only when every piece did its job.

In the command center, Jarrod saw the change immediately.

“She’s stabilizing,” K.C. said.

“I can see that,” Jarrod replied.

His voice was rougher now, not softer, but stripped to bone.

On the ravine camera, Caroline’s helmet lamp steadied from a frantic arc to a controlled, shallow sway.

She had heard him. She had understood. She had chosen to help them save her.

In her hiding spot near the service road, Melanie watched through her binoculars as the floodlit ravine turned into a living machine. Ropes moved. Rescuers shifted. Commands flashed across the course. The little speck that should have vanished into darkness was being drawn back toward light.

Her fingers tightened on the focus wheel, her knuckles white.

She saw no romantic miracle. No reckless lover falling from heaven.

Worse. She saw a whole system wake up around Caroline Thompson.
