Chapter 867
She lifted her head, her eyes meeting Sloane’s without a flicker of fear. Her voice was ice. “My personal life is not part of your training evaluation, Instructor.”
It was a direct challenge. A line drawn in the sand.
Sloane’s control finally snapped. The last vestiges of professional decorum burned away in a blaze of pure, personal hatred.
She straightened up, her voice booming across the range for all to hear. “Trainee Thompson, for gross insubordination and contempt toward a superior officer—”
Caroline did not move.
She did not let Sloane finish building the noose.
“Correction, Instructor,” Caroline said, her voice carrying with surgical calm across the firing line. “I responded to an inappropriate personal remark unrelated to marksmanship evaluation. I request that Range Control log the preceding exchange.”
The air changed.
It was subtle, but every trained adult on the line felt it. A private humiliation had just become a recordable event.
Instructor Reynolds’s head turned sharply.
Instructor Sharpe went still.
The range safety officer near the control booth looked down at the active recording console, then very carefully looked away, as if deciding how badly he wanted to survive the next five minutes.
Sloane’s face hardened. “Are you accusing me of misconduct, Thompson?”
“No, Instructor,” Caroline said. “I’m preserving context.”
A ripple went through the trainees. Not laughter. Not open rebellion. Something worse for Sloane: attention.
Caroline felt the exhaustion in her bones, the raw sting in her mouth, the black ache of jealousy still coiled beneath her ribs. But none of it touched her voice.
“I completed the firing order,” she continued. “I hit the assigned target. If additional corrective action is required, I request the standard be stated in measurable terms and entered into the range log.”
Sloane stared at her.
The range, the squad, the instructors, everything had become a courtroom without walls.
Dragging Caroline to the command building would have been easy theater. It would also have been a repetition, and this time Caroline had left Sloane no clean path to perform it. The moment Sloane put her hands on her, the range recording, Reynolds’s eyes, Sharpe’s silence, and Caroline’s formal language would turn a tantrum into evidence.
Sloane understood that.
The realization made her even angrier.
For one terrible second, it looked as if she might reach for Caroline anyway. Her fingers flexed at her side, sharp and pale.
Then she smiled.
It was a thin, elegant, poisonous thing.
“Measurable terms,” Sloane repeated softly. “Fine.”
She turned away from Caroline and faced the entire firing line.
“Since Trainee Thompson has demonstrated such exceptional command of precision shooting, she has just volunteered to become the standard.”
A murmur of confusion moved through the squad.
Sloane’s smile widened.
“New drill. Cold-bore pressure relay. Each of you will fire one round at two hundred yards. Trainee Thompson will stand behind the line and call the wind correction before each shot. If your round misses the scoring ring, your shooter fails.” She paused, letting the cruelty sharpen. “And Thompson’s after-action report will explain why her instruction failed under pressure.”
The punishment shifted shape before Caroline’s eyes.
