Chapter 869
K.C. Bell’s gaze passed over the firing line as the final hit was logged, settling briefly on Caroline. He gave a short, almost imperceptible nod. It was not rescue. It was confirmation. The record was complete.
Caroline, however, didn’t move at once. She stood her ground, her eyes fixed on K.C., waiting. She needed to see how this ended.
Sloane, seeing the silent exchange, felt a surge of defiant rage. “Sergeant Major Bell, this is an internal training matter. Step aside.”
K.C. didn’t flinch. He did not need to step between Sloane and Caroline like a human shield. The range logs, the active cameras, Reynolds’s attention, and Sharpe’s silence had already created the barrier Sloane could no longer cross.
He addressed Caroline, his voice calm but carrying the unassailable weight of a direct order. “Trainee Thompson. Your relay is complete. Return to your barracks. Now.”
The command was absolute. It was Jarrod’s voice, channeled through this man. Caroline hesitated for only a second, then turned and walked away without a backward glance, leaving the two of them in the tense silence of the firing line.
The air grew thick and cold.
“Whose side are you on, Bell?” Sloane hissed, her voice trembling with fury. “Are you undermining your commanding officers for a trainee?”
K.C. didn’t answer her question. He took a slow, deliberate look toward the range control booth, where the red recording light still glowed. Then his eyes returned to her.
His voice dropped to a low, metallic quiet that was far more terrifying than any shout.
“Instructor Hawke. I will say this only once.”
“The Colonel’s directive was clear. You can train her. You are not, under any circumstances, to use training authority for personal degradation, retaliation, or manufactured disciplinary traps.”
He tapped the tiny, almost invisible communication device in his ear. “Everything that happened on this range was recorded. Your remark. Her request for context. Your attempt to turn a successful shot into a squad liability drill. Every command. Every hit. Every witness.”
The blood drained from Sloane’s face. She felt a sudden, sickening lurch in her stomach. She was being watched. Monitored.
“Your actions have crossed the line,” K.C. continued, his voice devoid of any emotion. “This is not a warning. This is a final notice.”
His tone grew colder, harder. “If you make one more move against Trainee Thompson that is outside the written training syllabus, I will not be reporting it to Colonel Romero.”
He let that sink in before delivering the killing blow.
“I will submit the complete, unedited file of your conduct directly to the Inspector General’s office at Joint Special Operations Command.”
The threat was surgical. It was fatal. An investigation from JSOC would be the end of everything. Her career, her reputation, her entire life. Jarrod wouldn’t be able to protect her, even if he wanted to.
A tremor started in Sloane’s hands. It wasn’t from the cold. It was from pure, unadulterated fear. For the first time, she understood. She wasn’t dealing with a Colonel’s pet. She was dealing with an asset protected by an invisible, ruthlessly efficient system of power she couldn’t even comprehend.
